Nice smart setup. I like it! Wish mine was as tidy (or tidy at all actually) :).
Those Tannoys look really good, as does the rest of the setup!

Cheers both :)
More new blood ;) (I know it's not ideal sat on top of the poor little Croft but it's all getting disconnected and safely stored at the end of the week for the decorators)

Where did you get the unit mounted on castors Roy?
Cheers

It's an Ikea 'Corras' Barry
I bought m8 castors from ebay for my 2 units andcswapped out the spikes. I wanted to becable to get to the back. It works well enough

You should have kept those Diamond 7.2's you 'gave away' to Alex. Bloody good they are, despite their size ;)

Wondered if you'd ever got your hands on them Dave (btw I actually bought them for £7!). I have a pair of 9.1s in one of my upstair's systems.

They're a bit in your face Andy (but I quite like that) the Quads have tamed them a bit.
Sounding not bad (apologies for the music, not long seen 'Jersey Boys' & liked it )

I understand why you have the tt as your avatar, Roy -- yummy!
Interesting comment about the 303 / 606 / Elites .... I deduce that the Elite monos are more like 303 with more power. Would that be about right? (I've been curious about the Elite amps myself and am familiar with the 606).
I deduce that the Elite monos are more like 303 with more power.
Hadn't really thought of it like that but yes! The sound from the 606 seemed more closed in (moved it on for same price I paid for it so had a free audition, would still like to try a 'mark 2' though and a 707 & 909 :)). The 303 is still being used in the bedroom system with a Creek pre amp & some Diamond 155s.
Got someone stopping for a couple of nights so I've had to tidy the spare (kit) room (there's some in the cupboard as well) :)
http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/ss68/Lodger56/DSCF3035_zpsxtvxaqoh.jpg
Still got the crowns Roy? how do they compare to the quads?
Yep, still got the Crowns Grant (they're in the cupboard :)). Fair to say the Quads are more refined (although I have been experimenting a little with speaker placement which has helped improve things - amazing how much difference a few inches makes) & I must try the Krell again at some stage...
I have actually sold a couple of amps & a pair of speakers, trying to resist buying more.
Really couldn't stand to see the PS-6750 sitting idly in a corner, more for late night vinyl listening via the headphone socket on the Teac amp.

Lovely table the Sony. It's long been on my wanted list. Not so urgent now I bought a Toshiba SR370. I'll get one eventually I think just to scratch the itch.

Enough space to do a bit of break dancing there, Roy.
It does make that end of the room look rather sparse but the speakers sound so much better now they can 'breathe' (and I have already had a bit of a boogie)
Trying long interconnects/short speaker cables.

& room for more kit ;)
I feel sick looking at that.
I feel sick looking at that.
Thanks, picture updated.
That's better - it was like looking at the world of Mister Soft before. :)
I was reading somewhere that you want the area around the speakers sparsely damped and the listening area well damped. Seems to make sense. have you tried the speakers a bit further out or is that the optimum position established>

They sound pretty good where they are but I'll experiment with them further into the room + there are bungs to play with.
The listening area will be quite well damped, I'll be in it :)
Having a crack with the Crowns again. They're certainly more up front than the Quads which makes some material sound better but can be a bit fatiguing on other stuff, hey ho :)

Nice amps those Crowns. Good value I think. Ive a couple of pairs of pro amps that i rather like.

http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/ss68/Lodger56/pspre_zpsztvimfki.jpg
Well they've usurped the Quads for the moment, seem to have a cleaner sound. I think they work better with an active pre so using them with my Croft for now.

Looks good. Put an £800 price tag on, make up some waffle about how the tubular frame and the shelves have been painstakingly developed to offer the best possible support and they'll fly out. ;) Or is £800 too cheap?

Haven't had it on long so still sampling well known recordings but, overall so far, I prefer it to the Ortofon Red I had in there before. Less strident on certain records making for an easier listen :)
Anything that looks that Nineteen-Seventies has to be utterly brilliant.

Ah. Thought they looked a bit big. :)
Nice. A fairly rare speaker. I should have guessed from the three ports.
The ceramic magnet Tannoys are overlooked by some. I'm using Cheviot Mk.II's in my little den and have to say, they are signficantly better than any 12" HPD or Monitor Gold speaker I've had.
That's the way to do it. Very tasty indeed.
I'd got the Quad QMP monoblocks just before these came up for sale but they seem to work ok together, just got to be a little careful with the volume control.
The Ardens have been refurbed with prestige twin roll fabric surrounds.
The rest -

You've assembled a great system Roy. It's all right up my street. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on the Ardens. FWIW, I've been very happy with my Berkeley Mk 2s which I think have the same 15" drivers as yours.

Did you used to have a PS6750 Paul?
I'm enjoying the Ardens, I've realised they're a lot more 'natural' than the DC10Ts I was using in the main system before which, by comparison, had slightly over blown bass on some material. I've had the Ardens a little over a month now so they're still finding their feet a little, vinyl certainly sounds better with them.

I did have a PS-6750 but that was a couple of years ago. It's a lovely wee deck. I have to agree about the bass on the big Tannoy DCs. I also find it very natural, just effortless.

What's the verdict? A Tim De Paravicini design. Interesting choice of valve to use.
Very nice set up Roy and I agree that the MK2 Ardens are a fair bit more natural sounding than the DC10T's which can sound a little toppy and less effortless. Enjoy.

Yes, had a few logistic problems getting it down here (a friend was due down before Xmas but then didn't visit until a couple of weeks back). Then it needed a few minor adjustments which I was unable to carry out due to problems with my right arm. But, thanks to Paul from my local Audio T, it's up and running and sounding great!

Cheers both. The bloke from Audio T had never worked on a 401 before, it was quite frustrating because I knew exactly what needed doing but couldn't do it because of my gammy arm (seeing a consultant tomorrow, probably to be told I'm joining a waiting list..). I ended up supervising his every move (part of the conversation went - me 'that wheel's not turning?', him 'is it supposed to?', me 'yes, that's what governs the speed', you get the picture).

The Cambridge/M2tech combo was sounding a little sharp on some material through the Croft so now plumbed into the Emotiva and sounding far better behaved :)

Was getting a bit fed up comparing the Roksan with the m2tech/Cambridge combo (some things sound better on this, some things sound better on that..) so stuck this little duo on the front end and just listening to music for a change.

Very true. Going to have a few days just listening to the radio.
Using original covers for a change, amp ‘stands’ made out of bamboo chopping boards and pine door knobs.

I really feel that they accurately produce what's coming from the source(s) with quite a natural sound. They don't produce as much bass as my DC10Ts but they could be a little overblown at times with certain materials. It's generally an unfatiguing, satisfying listen & they sound excellent with the valve amps, better than the big solid state quads? Could be..
Cheers Roy. The bass thing does concern me a bit, as I'd have to use them a long way out from the back wall.
The Ardens DO bass but more engaged with the rest of the spectrum, I had them cranked up the other day playing some Hardcore Superstar (Swedish Street Metal if you please..) and there was plenty of bass but, then there was plenty of mid range & plenty of top end. It just sounded right. Sometimes with the DC10Ts it felt like brown noise..

My wife really liked those copper monos, and I don't think she has noticed yet that they are no longer among those present. :eyebrows:
They provide adequate power for you?
This is your first taste of valve amps, I think? You enjoying the presentation?

There was no apparent drop in volume changing from the 260 watt quads to the 12 watt valve amps (but then there wouldn't be?) & they sound excellent but I've yet to have a concerted (louder ;))listening session with them, they've more or less just been playing the radio for the last couple of days apart from a couple of LPs tonight.

There's a concept on TV screens, that there is an optimum size related to the size of the room.
Do we feel that applies to speakers?
Was thinking the Tannoys were a bit big for your room. (Let alone the amps!)
This coming from me, who had full size Klipschorns in a 18 X 12 foot room, to give some non-bias.

They look interesting (just Googled them). I'd be enquiring about the servicing and spares situation. The drivers are pretty specialised.
They’re hardly used Geoff but good point. I bought them off the Jaguar Land Rover treasurer, his missus decided these were too big and now he’s reduced to a sound bar (by the same company).

Shame you are so far from me, Roy, I'd like to ask for an invite to come listen. :)
I'd like to ask for an invite to come listen. :)
You'd always be very welcome Jerry if you're ever over this way.
The Tritons are very different to the Tannoys, their response seems faster which works better with certain kinds of music & they certainly seem to prefer solid state amps to valves. I'm keeping both sets of monoblocks / speakers for now; my pre has two lots of balanced outs so I can keep everything plumbed in :)
Trying one of these Marantz CD6006 uk editions, very good, I was surprised at the sound quality from a USB memory stick even with just the passive pre.

How's the Triton/Tannoy tussle going, Roy?
You still have both?
Keeping both pairs for the forseeable Jerry, they each have their merits & I'm getting to know which amp/speaker combo to use based on what music I'm going to be listening to, quite a luxury really but I'll enjoy the situation until circumstances dictate I'll need to move one pair on.
As everybody’s staying for a bit I ‘fabricated’ an amp stand (or in this case took a bow saw to a 4 section lack unit).

Looks good but those power amps only just fit on top, another 5 mill and you'd be knackered.
You're right Martin. Might bring my amp stands (chopping boards with doorknobs screwed on) back into use as the knobs are inset & they'll sit better.
Thought about having them side on but looked awkard.
You know there could be some money in flogging your stand. It looks like it cost proper money. A bit of badge engineering, call it the 'Grand Emperor King Mark 5', stick a 2 grand price tag on and they'll fly out.
Would be fine till you looked at the right hand side where I did my 'adjustments' with the bow saw, it's a little 'rustic' :D
Just make something up about it improving sound quality.
Knock it out for £5k + £2k for the ‘bespoke bamboo amp stands’ (chopping boards with knobs)

I one day, decided that I couldn't see why I should clutter up my living room with my 6' X 4' cases of LPs and same of CDs, so stored them in a 'spare' room. Easy enough to go and select a few things to play, and nice clear uncluttered room to sit in.

I did have my records stored upstairs but found I was never playing them. Quite like having them on display anyway. The other end of the room is ‘tidier’.

Yup, I had a Cyrus CD8X CDP and thoroughly enjoyed it! Very musical indeed - iirc my "1 Word Review" for it was 'beautiful'!
Yes it’s a Cyrus CDt into a Chord Hugo TT (with the devilish little chromecast audio lurking). Very pleased with the noise it’s making, a very precise sound. Both units were preowned and I got a very good trade in deal on my m2tech dac from Marc at Fanthorpes.
Slot loading CDt takes a little getting used to but I’ll suffer it for it’s performance.
Yeah, nice digital 'front end', and I'd guess not one many folks have tried. Which digital cable are you using between the transport and DAC. In my experience, that's one of the most sonically influential cables there is in a hi-fi set up.
