Ixos 105 is one of the best digital coax I have tried.
Prices vary a lot, but can be cheap --- https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?LH_PrefLoc=2&_sop=15&_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=ixos+105&_sacat=293
I can loan you one if you fancy, Roy - just PM me your full name and address.
I've also got 0.5m pair of good W&M (Dutch) balanced cables you could try if they are long enough.

Thanks very much for the offers Jerry but the Hugo has a BNC type coax socket (bit of a pain) & I’ve got plenty of balanced cables to play with. Cheers anyway.

Very good of you Jerry, I’ll pm you.
Updated rack (need a silver tuner), one Goldenear, one Tannoy & one anniversary card..

The Goldenears (all the way from Baltimore) really hold their own against the Tannoys but, overall, the Tannoys sound better for the majority of what I listen to.

Or do the batteries in your remote make a difference..
This turned up in a box of bits, bolted it in a head shell without expecting much but it’s really quite good

Slight update, I’ve started using the Cambridge CXC again as I think it betters the Cyrus CDT + the Marantz 6006 is plumbed into the Hugo to play memory card content through (I use them in the car)

I really rate the CXC, I think you'd have to spend a lot more to do better.
No new kit just a tidy up and repositioning of the rack & speakers + been experimenting with toe in

Thanks Shane. I have a blind to install at which point I'll probably move the rack. Till then I don't want the toerags round here seeing too much when the curtains are open.
Great little unit purchased for the bedroom system following the demise of my Pioneer receiver. A Cambridge One. It has DAB & FM, Bluetooth, 2 digital, 1 usb & 1 analogue input, plays CDs & has a 30 watt per channel amp, all this for £160!

That looks like a nice little piece of kit there, Roy! I think it is ideal for such a setup. I should look into something similar myself, although my Naim Uniti isn't doing anything right now, should use it.

It sounds pretty good for the price. Bought direct from Cambridge via eBay as 'manufacturer refurbished' stock but it was obviously brand new & never been out of the box.

Decided the phono stage in the Luxman was just as good as the Quad 24p I’d been using (maybe better?), so one less box in the rack & I’m trying an old Pioneer stable platter as a transport, the Cyrus is better but sometimes fussy about what it plays.

Traded in for the Luxman (3 boxes down to one, or 4 if you count the phono stage I just moved on).
Well the Ardens have gone up the A12 to Chelmsford, replaced by the Goldenears (for now).

No Shane. Not sure what will replace them to be honest (or even if they'll be replaced).
You can rid yourself of the marks on the carpet easily Roy. Just grab a steam iron and a tea cloth, set to full steam and iron over the marks with the tea cloth. The indentations will lift. Job done. If carpet a cheap nylon or polyester don't do it.
I guess you must be missing the big Tannoy sound. Or do the Goldenears do scale as well?

The Goldenears have powered subs so the sound is quite full but I have to admit they don't have the 'gravitas' of the Ardens. Thanks for the carpet top tip :)

I did something similar over the past few days with my Berkeleys. The Berkleys have M8 nuts but not strong enough for the M8 Superspikes I got recently. So got some hardwood (Utile) and fixed M8 inserts into the hardwood. As expected the sound tightened up nicely with a clearer focus, as well as raising the speakers to a more useful height. Did think of granite but not sure how I would fix M8 inserts into the granite.
The chopping boards are bamboo (bought dirt cheap off ebay I think), I used them as amp stands for a while. The spikes were from a pair of speakers I sold on so the experiment will cost me nothing ;)

There’s a definite improvement but I’ve still to experiment more with bass level (the Goldenears have active subs with their own volume control) & placement.
think it may be more pronounced without spikes, but only trial will tell.. Granite or something dencer will also help. you want a solid base to hit into i think... looks good job tho
Looks great Roy.
Also see you have been steam ironing. :eyebrows:
Well it's cost me nothing Grant & I may invest in other speakers anyway if the Goldenears don't work out (the money I got for the Tannoys remains earmarked as a speaker fund so I don't spend it on watches).

The carpet's more or less recovered on it's own. It was fitted throughout the house when I moved in almost twenty years ago & is much better quality than I would have purchased. When I think of what it's had to endure over the years (I used to have four dogs) I'm amazed how good it still looks.

There’s a centre click where I’ll start from , it was ‘quarter past’ dialled in for the bedroom, bit bass heavy downstairs.

In my situation speakers are 3m apart and i am seated 3.2m from my speakers. They are around 80cm away from the wall. Also toe in in which the speakers cross behind the head. But this is based on carefully listening a lot. Check the website from Goldenear and your manuaal bec speaker placement is very important.

The sound is tighter & more focused, they actually sound 'newer' if that makes sense. The bass seems more powerful, that may be down to the larger ports and/or the rubber cone surrounds (my old Ardens had had fabric surrounds fitted). Anyway, all good, apart from maybe a new streaming source I'm completely satisfied with the sound from this set up.

Have to admit I intended to compare the two but day one just plugged the Bluesound straight into the amp & been enjoying the flexibility, convenience & sound quality since. I read somewhere that the Chord doesn't support MQA anyway but I stand to be corrected on that, I'm no streaming expert!

Personally I don't bother with MQA.
Anyway I reckon that if Bluesound is doing any MQA unfolding it will be sending that (unfolded) signal via the coax output (to your Chord) so you will still benefit.

Given the price deferential I should certainly hope so, but interesting to see if actually the case.
Can you not wire such that you only need to change the input on your amp to get an instant a/b comparison? I assume you have a coax cable to run between the Bluesound and the Chord.

I’m in the same boat Roy.
I have a Pioneer streamer running Tidal HIFI and it’s all I use now, even sold my CD player. It’s so handy and sounds great.
I use the analogue outs of the streamer for everything except classical music for which I use the DAC in my preamp via the digital out from the streamer. The Pioneer streamer is punchier so suits my blues and country stuff the McIntosh DAC has great separation which suits classical, best of both worlds. Funny thing is they are both ESS Sabre DACs as far as I know.
Might be an idea if the Chord offers a different presentation.

The Bluesound even covers my radio listening requirements via the net so that's another box gone. Tried it via the Chord today and it definitely sounded better than the Bluesound's internal DAC but then as has been mentioned previously you'd worry if it didn't!
A (slight) tidy of the rack. Just the one (little used) CD transport now & moved the shelves to give the Luxman more breathing space.

You've got exactly the same lamp as me.
That’s got a smart bulb in it that’s programmed to go on and off at set times (or I can control it remotely). You’re probably wondering why I didn’t just put it in the uplighter? So am I.
I like those little lamps because you can just angle them up or down to control the light level. Or aim them at different surfaces to change the colour of the light. No muss, no fuss.
The lower the light levels the better the music sounds.
Years ago friend of mine had a lovely sounding system, LP12 Sondek with Audiolab 8000A into KEF Kit speakers. But his living room light was a fluorescent strip like you used to get in kitchens. And it buzzed and whined. So you'd sit there trying to get into the music with the room lit like an operating theatre and this terrible noise coming from above. He didn't seem to mind.
Dad always favoured fluorescent lighting in all it’s retina detaching glory.
Is the lamp pluged into a socket well away from the rest of the audio system? LED/'smart' bulbs can generate a lot of unwanted mains noise.

Opposite side of the room (more by luck then judgement). Thanks Barry.
Roy, judging from your picture you seem to have a similar seat positioning and speaker height to me. I found tilting the speakers (Berkeleys in my case) backwards very slightly opened up the upper registers nicely. 2 inches did it for me. Every expense was spared in this experiment. :eyebrows:

I think the height of the new unit helps. I had to take the door off it which was a shame but it was that or get a smaller amp...
The Luxman really is a superb amp, I can't sing it's praises enough, a lot of dough but worth every penny I reckon.

They also had the minty'est Garrard 401 I'd ever seen, not a mark on it, didn't look like it had ever been used! I was very happy with how clean my 1965 example was, until I saw that glistening lump of temptation

Yes, I had one on home demo from Fanthorpes, they bought me a new one when I decided I was having it & half filled their van with my traded in gear.

Funny enough the Garrard and what seemed like a complete immaculate history of Quad, came as trade in on a Luxman TT.
Found an 'Old Charm' unit locally. Bit tight for the Luxman but looks ok. More solid than the unit I was using & the turntable is dead level.

Thought I'd see what the Luxman would do to the Q Acoustics. It said 'do some bass you muvvas'. Sadly they won't listen.

Might be completely in my mind but they do sound a little muffled.
Just stuck the covers on for a different look for a change. I've put the covers back on the A/V Q Acoustics & bedroom Tannoys as well, it probably won't be for long, I like seeing the drivers.
Slight update, the cd racks have gone (along with the cds that have been 'archived' in crates upstairs) allowing me to have the speakers further apart.

I have always assumed that speakers sporting covers were designed with the covers in mind. Removing the covers may well make a difference to the sound, but that was not what the designer intended.
As far as aesthetics go - I've always preferred the look of speakers with the drive units covered - but then I'm old school.

i think you'll find most manufacturers make speakers to work without grills, but strangely in some systems they can make things sound better, my Kralks for instance didn't come with grills they were an optional extra you paid more for, personally i prefer speakers without a grill but each to their own
Room and system look great Roy, I'm sure you must enjoy listening in there.

I probably asked this before but are your Ardens the Legacy or originals?

Don't worry Roy, the only items that have remained unchanged in my system from 1974 are the turntable and pickup arm and the speakers.

Yes, streamers aren’t much to look at, not like the Luxman or 401.

I got one of those Sharks, very good except don't see why they have to light up like Las Vegas. Why would you want to hoover (or 'shark') in the dark? You've got no lights in your house but at least your carpet is clean?
Just drains the battery quicker and it takes ages to charge.

New speakers! Don’t get excited, the tannoys haven’t gone anywhere just got some little q acoustics to replace jbl control ones on tv duty for forty quid off eBay. Much more natural sound than the jbls. First audio based purchase in years.

Nice set up, but I couldn't put up with all those unsightly wires. Not that I would have a TV in the bedroom: we use
a bedroom for two things only, and watching TV is not one of them. ;)

Yeah but do the bread crumbs not drive you mad? :ner:
Anita would like a larger telly, but when I asked her what we would do with the current perfectly functioning TV, she suggested sticking it in the bedroom. Not while I've a breath in my body! I want the bedroom to be as tech-free as possible, though I do compromise a bit: My phone goes in there with me but only for the alarm clock function. There is an unplugged and never used Amazon Echo, and Anita's phone which is there for emergencies.
Who am I kidding? The room's like a quiet day in Currys :(
The bedroom is not entirely free of electronics. There is an alarm clock, a Roberts FM radio, and we often charge our smartphones overnight there as well.

I really should change the battery, it's been twenty past two for a few days now.You could save money and set a daily alarm on your phone to remind you when to check the time on the clock. As long as you don't want to know what the time is at any other time of the day. A bonus is you can do it twice a day.
Actually if you do want to know the time when it's not 2.20 you could always move the hands to the time when you know you'll want to check it.
