Yes, it's the B side of Greg Lake's Xmas single. I was using this to try the turntable out as I'm not sure on the condition of the cartridge. Turns out it's probably only worthy of the skip which is a shame as it's a proper old thing.

Far too old to DJ (and have never been quite trendy enough). They're 1200s, absolutely pristine, they came as a pair (with a mixing desk thingy which will make a good door stop). Any offers on what cartridges work well with them? they came with shure dj type ones but I've slapped an old VMS20E in one of them for now, sounds ok if a little sibbilant

Haven't noticed, it does suffer with a crackly channel for the first couple of minutes after switching it on but then sound fine. I've tried it with some Wharfdale Diamond 9.1s and the Missions are a lot better.

Cheers for that Mark, I'm in Essex so we're actually neighbours (and I often go through Cambs on my way to/from Teeside visiting friends). I'll listen out for some low bass tones on my next trip through and follow my ears ;)

Nice little system that Roy, I particularly like the Wharfedale's, probably the best range of affordable speakers the company has ever made and IMO they are contenders for the best budget bookshelf speakers of all time. How do they sound running off the Mini-T?

Arrived yesterday, less of a bargain at 40 notes was this Sony CD Jukebox (always wanted one, don't know why...). Nice solid sound - sounded even better when I put the CDs in the correct way round :doh:

That's weird Steve, looking at your kit list we do indeed have the same Technics CDP but I also own, coincidently, a Sony Minidisc player & Sony AV Receiver (albeit slightly different models - MDS-JE520 & DA1200ES).

I'll have to try them with a few more sources/amps before I make my mind up Paul. Had them wired up to my old Musical Fidelity amp in the kitchen playing Planet Rock on DAB (not the best source) and they sounded ok - Bass was quite well defined but treble struck me as a little on the bright side. Now got them linked to a Sony amp streaming Grooveshark. The initial impression is very good.

Haven't tried the Kenwoods yet, the mesh on the front of one of them is caved in & touching the driver so I'll need to sort that out first.

Think my problem with them is that, to me, they've always seemed slightly muffled compared to the cheaper bright speakers I'm used to but with the 306 they seem to have a more 'grown up' sound.

Been using the 77 pre into the 306 for a few weeks now Martin (had the 405-2 in there before, that's being used with the Tisbury in system 2 at the moment), quite pleased with the results. Just came across an HE stylus for my Shure & have popped that in, sounding good via a recently purchased Gram Amp 2 into the 77.

Recently purchased a nice Quad 34 & have yet to try that with the 306, maybe next weekend when I've got a bit more time.

Correct Martin, Tannoy DC10Ts. I know modern Tannoys are generally poorly regarded on here but these sound great to me (in fact they've made all my other systems sounds crap by comparison so I may be quite busy on 'Private exhibitions')

Just picked this up, sold on ebay for 'parts or not working', turned out it just needed an earth cable. Some issues with the way the counter weight assembly is attached (or not!) to the arm, just needs a longer screw (oh Matron!). The fella I bought it off had the weight hard up against the stop so I guess the new AT stylus that was fitted had been tracking at about 5 gms! Anyway just needs a good clean up (no apparent scratches or marks) & it'll be a reasonable back up deck (the fact that it's got a removable headshell means I can try different cartridges on it easily. All for the princely sum of £7.99!

Touch sensitive start/stop (it's actually got brake shoes so stops instantly) & 'photokinetic end-of-play mechanism' (the arm comes off the record) & built like a brick outhouse (it's survived my clumsy fumbling for 30 odd years). I keep trying other decks but always come back to this one ;)

It's an Ortofon VMS20E with a non-Ortofon stylus in an ADC headshell (cheap & cheerful for playing iffy vinyl)

If you feel curious about another similarly ‘disposable’ cartridge for that purpose (of the MM variety), try a Shure SC35C. It works fab with a Jelco, on direct-drive T/T.

Would not expect it to match the Krell Roy. not sure which model yours is but some run class a. and having owned an a class its a sound that can take some beating. nothing else sounds quite like it for me. The Crowns get a decent name though and I have been using some pro monos that i am now getting used to.

I've had one for years. Beautiful thing to use but never sounded that great in my main rig. Just too smooth and silky to be interesting. Hook it up to a system with more budget speakers and it sounds excellent. I've also had it running as a transport into my Sony A/V amp - that works well, too.

It replaced a Pioneer stable platter cdp in the system pictured (you can just see the 303 bottom right). Not sure if it's better, just been having one of those days when everything sounds good, from Orb through Roger Daltrey to Deep Purple.

If you're interested, have a look on the Dada website for 606 upgrades. The main one was a change to 15,000uF caps in the power supply (as per the 606-2 onwards). The transformer became a toroid very late on in the mk1's life and continued.

Lovely old amp - used to need some warming through to sound fully at ease, but this got better as production went on I remember. The mk2 sounded great from switch-on.

Decorating done (like the colour?), main rack back in with the 303 (preferred the sound over the 606). Running the internet radio & CDP through the MF Dac makes an improvement. Plus My JVC turntable's back on top for now.
