Wilko used to be our 'go to' shop for all sorts of stuff - along with Boyes (same style) but since the last couple of years we have The Range ... much closer by and cheaper for just about everything nondescript that you had no idea you really needed until you did. We have also two new 'cheap tat' stores recently added to the itinerary - Home Sense and Home Bargains - pure joy!

Personally, I hate spending a penny more than necessary on anything (regardless of how insignificant) and will hunt down a bargain wherever they are to be had. Fortunately, Mrs Mikmas is even more thrifty than I.

Mrs. P will drive miles to our branch of 'The Range' to save a few bob, then goes into Costa next door to spend three quid on a latte...

Drove my neighbours panda(a basic one) and it was quite a decent drive.. their 4 wheel drive ones are very good.

Not all 'cheap tat' Marco - not by a long chalk.
The Range (for example) sell a lot of known brand products (like Dulux paint and JCB batteries) but at a price that puts other stores, like B&Q or Boots to shame.

I've not heard of The Range. Don't think they have any branches in my area. In terms of paint, as we live in a period property, we mainly use paints reflecting the colours commonly used during that era (i.e.Victorian), from Farrow & Ball.

Geoff mentioned parcel tape - I'm pretty sure, based on my own experience, that you would be really hard put to find a significant difference in quality between the example from Wilko or that from Tesco. Not to mention the number of times wines from Lidl have beaten much posher (and pricier) examples from the likes of Waitrose or M&S in quality tests

Lol - is Tesco now considered as 'exotic'?

As an oenophile of long standing, I'm 100% with you on the Lidl thing! Same applies with Aldi - far better than the selection of wines in most other supermarkets, although Waitrose are ok. M&S is solely for pee-soaked social climbers. The wines in Lidl or Aldi are fine for 'slurping'.

We buy our fine wine, which we keep for special occasions, from specialist wine merchants.

Indeed, but I won't buy shite just to save a few pence. One has standards, dear boy.

Also, sometimes buying cheap stuff is a false economy in the long term, certainly with larger more important items. My policy there is to buy once, but buy well, so that if looked after, whatever it is has the potential to last a lifetime. We did that recently when we bought our Laura Ashley suite for the lounge.

Not cheap, but I doubt we'll need another set in our lifetime.

I can see why you would buy Laura Ashley - repeatedly scrubbing stains from lesser fabrics would quickly fade the pattern.
