Great movie. Perhaps not to everybody's taste?

Not sure about it being a "great movie". Based on a story by Harry Harrison: 'Make Room, Make Room', it deviates significantly from the story in that to feed an overpopulated planet, a synthetic food made from soya beans and lentils (hence 'Soylent Green') and not the more sensational idea of using the recently deceased and putting them back in the food cycle. Harrison was so incensed with the change of idea that he refused to have anything to do with the script, and insisted his name be removed from the credits.

Sad that it was Edward G. Robertson's last role.

In the film they are already eating various colours of 'Soylent', only Soylent Green is people. So what is the twist ending in the book then, or does it not have one?

Personally I think it is a good film, maybe not a great one. If you are ever feeling in an overly optimistic mood watch this and 'Silent Running' back to back, that will soon sort you out.

Opps - sorry, I mistook the author: it was Harry Harrison, and not Ray Bradbury. There is no "twist ending" that I know of in the book, but it was a long time ago when I read it.

'Silent Running' is a depressing film, but again not a good one IMO.

Met, and shook the hand of Harry Harrison at Albacon, a science fiction convention in Glasgow back in the 90’s.....my signed Stainless Steel Rat books are still pride of my bookcase...aside my signed Harlan Ellison written Batman comic.
