Although I have never heard that particular amplifier I have owned one by Yamaha and it was pretty flat, bland and dull. I replaced it with a Trio Sigma drive amp that was hugely better.

Except the WHF review this amp in particular is so supposed to be exceptionally good and nothing like the more generic offerings they make.

At the moment I'm only using a modded Cambridge audio A1 (£60 new).

I bought a Arcam A49, didn't like it, bought a second hand Musical Fidelity A308 pre power, didn't like it. Naim Nait 5i, Nait XS, didn't like them either but the Yamaha seems to get some fantastic user feedback.

That old fruit box was brand new in 2016 and set me back £6.5k. I love the soumd of the Linn, wanted one for over 25 years, it may be old hat but I just love the sound.

That being said there's something very special about a SL which I still think can't be beaten. I've got a large collection of 78's and 7” 45's as well 12” singles and except the 78's it's not the same playing them on a Linn.

Detachable headshell is a huge bonus onvoisly and it also looks a million dollars worth!

I should soon have my own new SL-1200GR up and running with a new design Jelco TK-850S tonearm, which you are welcome to hear if you wish (I am in Norwich). I don't sell either Technics or Jelco (at the moment) - this setup is just to promote my new modular armboards for the Technics decks (old and new). I think the SL-1200GR will sound magnificent with the new Jelco, which bucks convention by adopting a knife-edge vertical bearing system in a much more substantial bearing structure compared to the existing Jelco range.

I know, but the GR largely shares the same motor design and control systems as the G but with one rotor instead of two, so it will give you more than a good 'feel' for how these new Technics decks play music.
