Rightly or wrongly, that's what I understood the term to mean until the recent threads on here put some doubt on it.

I guess that just goes to prove how deep-rooted the 'indoctrination' has been, Alex!

We're simply portraying a more 'abstract' view, and taking in the bigger picture

    Marco.

P.S Please continue to doubt and reconsider your preconceptions.

Ironically, the original Flat Earthers would have laughed out loud at the very idea of basing a system on a DD turntable, valve amplification and big old Tannoy speakers. It seems an odd lot to want to identify with.

Joe, you frequent PFM. How many of the original Flat Earthers from the early days of that forum now use valves and Tannoys or horns? Is it because they've migrated to pipe 'n slippers in their old age or because purely from a Flat Earth perspective there is life beyond Linn/Naim?

Even if we stay with solid state there are umpteen other brands that embrace Flat Earth virtues. Densen for example and their motto,

Life's too short for boring hi-fi!

You don't gt much more Flat Earth than that.

I dunno. I can think of two off-hand (Tony L and Joe Petrik). There may be others. I was around PFM in its early days, but had a few years away, so I may have missed a few other converts.

Yes, Joe, but the mistake you're making is connecting the term 'flat-earth' to a group of people or a particular brand of equipment (this is merely the historical and simplistic view), instead of recognising it as a state of mind as Steve and I have explained it

That's the essence of what this is about: abandoning hard-bitten beliefs and redefining the meaning of 'flat-earth'. All we ask is that people consider this.

It seems a bit Humpty-Dumptyish to me:

'Humpty Dumpty took the book and looked at it carefully. `That seems to be done right --' he began.

`You're holding it upside down!' Alice interrupted.

`To be sure I was!' Humpty Dumpty said gaily as she turned it round for him. `I thought it looked a little queer. As I was saying, that seems to be done right -- though I haven't time to look it over thoroughly just now -- and that shows that there are three hundred and sixty-four days when you might get un-birthday presents --'

    `Certainly,' said Alice.

`And only one for birthday presents, you know. There's glory for you!'

`I don't know what you mean by "glory",' Alice said.

Humpty Dumpty smiled contemptuously. `Of course you don't -- till I tell you. I meant "there's a nice knock-down argument for you!"'

`But "glory" doesn't mean "a nice knock-down argument",' Alice objected.

`When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, `it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less.'

`The question is,' said Alice, `whether you can make words mean so many different things.'

`The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, `which is to be master -- that's all.'

In any case, why use a term to describe AoS that is obviously confusing for some people, and has negative connotations for others? It seems an unnecessary complication.

Jonathan Ribee, for one. More would come to mind if I sat and thought about it properly. These guys were at one time all high-profile (diehard) 'flat-earthers' (and Naim users).

However, the flat-earth 'conversions' of Tony L and Joe Petrik epitomise exactly what Steve and I are talking about. They've undoubtedly redefined the principles of what 'flat-earth' means to them (perhaps subconsciously). We've moved the same way.

We're simply encouraging people to think laterally - no pain, no gain, I guess... If 'flat-earth' has become dirty words, then why not clean them up?
