I heard a KSA300 driving Apogee Calipers and some big Usher Compass Dancers in the same session and in both cases I was impressed. With a Krell X64 DAC and matching pre.

The lower KAV (250a is the one I know) series is still good and fantastic on Jerry's MBLs. Not so good on my speakers I have to say.

I imagine this one would sound good on your Apogees, as in sweet and clean, but at only 50 watts I doubt it would do the business on the wallop side of things.

    Yeah. As if.
    Didn't know you had one.
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

I have two. Neither works anymore but when they did...lets put it this way when people say digital playback has advanced massively over the years I have a quiet chuckle. And the sheer weight behind the sound makes most other players sound like toys in comparison. It was really hard to wean myself back to ordinary players when they died.

Shame they don't work Martin. Will you get them looked at?

I wouldn't mind trying the SL-P1300, so I could run the digi out through my DAC. Dunno if they ever did that one in 240v though.

Alan says he might have a look at them some day. I'm convinced the issue is not the lasers but some component that has died, or a connector ribbon that has failed. I've had that before with cd players. You have the laser replaced because that is what everyone says, thinking lasers wear out like a stylus. But the fault persists, so it wasn't the laser.

EDIT having looked into it, it is possible to get almost everything but laser and mechanism.

I really must be going deaf... Into the IMF Compacts in the workroom, it was easy to get the middle bias lamps alight on the KSA50S and on funky bass stuff, the blue full-on lamps came on and the case started cooking nicely in half an hour or so. The Spendors did the same thing and the red bias lamps came on at quite moderate levels, the enclosed cabinet setting making things too hot for me after 30 minutes - the top plate got very hot and let alone the heatsinks. Obviously, free space (that I couldn't give it) and a cool room would pay dividends and maybe the Focals are rather more efficient than the Spendors, the BC2's being around 84db I think. Don't worry, I didn't ever strain the amp thermally, 'cos I checked it every five minutes or so and switched off when it got too warm. The plateau bias does mean the amp cools down quickly when not being driven hard and it'll idle barely warm all day, unlike its predecessors, which were 'full on' all the time.

The Focals are 90dB, and not a particularly difficult load compared to some WAF towers, impedance gets a bit low in the bass but obviously not a problem for an amp that can double down.

Not managed to get any of the LEDs to light up yet
