Congrats on the desireable power amp! Krells are one of the essential building bricks of modern high end in my view.
And, regarding the cooking i assume you just put your frying pan on top of the KSA?

Absolute classic film. My uncle took me to see it when it came out and I was a bit terrified. Love it now and watch it regularly.

Can be difficult frying a thick steak with butter unless you like it very rare.. normal butter burns too easily. Used to do my steak diane with butter.. a load of butter as it makes the base sauce. Add some herbs and worstershire saucehalf way then a splash of brandy and flambé... need fillit cut down middle and flattened into a butterfly shape... superb

A new treatment has been kicking about Hollywood for about a decade, it just never gets made.
Mind you I can't see the point, it is already a perfect film, a re-make could only be worse.

Please don't confuse the cheap KAV Krells with the KSA's and FPB's. the KAV was a cheaper range with a thinner sound and the power amps had no protection - from personal first hand experience...
In the mid 90's, custom was to use a KSA amp with an ARC preamp and the two different brands kind of worked well together at the time. The 50S was reviewed as slightly sweeter than the bigger ones, so a passive preamp with modern source is almost certainly better with this than any almost active preamp I'd say, unless the preamp was designed as a fully balanced design from input to output, as say, the period Levinsons were for example - this era of Krell KSA's were pretty well balanced all through, the single ended RCA inputs a secondary consideration in this case I understand.
Fully agree about 'Forbidden Planet.' One of my all time favourite films

Much tastier if you sear it properly, get some caramelisation going on, and create that nice blackened 'ribbed' effect on the surface of the steak [which is why you need a griddle pan]... It's all about maximising flavour!

Couldn't resist watching it again this afternoon. Although very much of it's time - was it really 1958? Yikes, I was 11 when I saw it first! - in some ways it was way ahead. I don't find the effects as distracting as the CGI efforts in modern films. They sort of fit with the whole look and character of it. Agree it was a scary film to watch as a little tyke.
Anyway back to Krell - I'm starting to get a handle on it. When you consider the price difference between this and the XTZ (which will also run pure class A although you lose a bit of wallop) the differences are not huge. It is a step up, but not sure that it is enough of a step up that a civilian would notice. Which shows how good the XTZ is. The Krell is slightly sweeter, more focused and more solid in the bass, maybe a little warmer there too. I noticed on fast drum rolls that there is less smear with the Krell, rapid fire transients like that are always a good test for an amp.
It so good enough that even though I am supposed to be evaluating it, I am forgetting about it and listening to the music instead
Despite the massive external heatsinks, or maybe because of them, it doesn't even get warm even after 4 or 5 hours of use at volume. The XTZ, in class A, would get very warm in the same space of time. Not worryingly so, but warmer than a typical big amp gets.
Just need to get my SLP1200 cd player working again and that will be it, perfect system, me done and dusted.
Yeah. As if.
