The Cruel Sea. Jack Hawkins, Donald Sinden, Denholm Elliott and Stanley Baker are the top stars along with the lovely Virginia McKenna as the leggy lovely, I think it was.
Released in 1953 and directed by Charles Frend who also gave us The Long Arm, and Scott of the Antartic. Based on the fabulous book by Nicholas Monsarrat. The film was shot on location in the Plymouth's Naval Dockyard and the English Channel. Scenes showing the sailors in the water were shot in the open-air water-tank at Denham Studios.
The film was both a commercial and critical success, especially in the United States.

Grant - Super film and, as you say, based on an an utterly compelling read by (Lt.Commander RNVR) Nicholas Monsarrat.
If you are interested in that part of the war you could check put the DVD documentary below - one of a remarkable series of DVDs created by Ronald Smith from RN war footage.
