No piccies to post (seeing as this is The Gallery), but I've just ordered a whole bunch of bits to try and make an LDR pre-amp. Lots of pure guesswork of course. I'm getting low impedance LDRs. If necessary I can bung resistors in series to make input impedance workable. LEDs and Halogen mini bulb light sources ordered too. I've got loads of small DC power supplies to try and obviously I'll have to experiment with voltage input via a suitable pot (I suppose I could use an LDR for that and just dim or raise the room lights ). We'll see. I'll probably cock it all up! Not sure how progressive a light I can get from an LED anyway. The halogen will work and the lumen count should be OK.

Now what do we have here? Arrived today, Eagle DL67 small vintage speakers from the seventies.

It's the contents I'm interested in. The main drive units are likely to be from Coral and should be top quality. The horn tweeters I believe were decent rebranded Foster (Fostex) units. I'm taking them apart now. It may take a while, as all the screw threads have been paint sealed. The drive units varied in these and other bass/mid drivers were sometimes used. Fingers crossed!

    Result (so far)!

I have one apart and inside is a single cone version of the old Eagle FR65 full range driver and of course the horn tweeter. The FR65 is more or less the equivalent of the Coral Flat 6. A fine driver. High sensitivity too.

I'll take the other one apart tomorrow and put a meter across them all, but these look good. The main driver is a full range unit and sounds extremely good. I've had a couple of pairs before. Perfect doped cloth roll surround on the main unit.

There is an 8" version. The FR8, which I've also had, but it's not as good.

    Here's a Coral Flat 6 to compare

    Not identical, but closely related.

You'd be surprised how heavy the drivers both are. Pretty hefty for the size. I have a project in mind using only vintage drive units.

Clue. I'll have to design a steep 13.5 kHz supertweeter filter now.
