You could check to see what RPi is seeing as well, SSH into the Pi and type sudo blkid this will tell you what the file system is for the block storage devices the Pi can see.

sudo fdisk -l will tell you more about the device identifiers and the partitions.

Edit: oh, and cat /proc/mounts will list all mounts

The Apple OSX Disk Utility can format fat32 (MS-DOS file system) and later versions also NTFS (Windows NT file system).
Fat32 is the lowest common denominator that can be read by practically any device. It has some limitations on file size.
NTFS should be the better choice.

When I started with Volumio it seemed like a good idea to format an old disk to fat32 rather than learn the Linux commands to load e.g. the Apple file system.
We have heard on this thread that Volumio reads NTFS with no modifications.

You SSH from another machine - effectively using Unix bash remotely.
Depending what type of computer you've got...

From Mac (OSX) you just open the Terminal window and type the following
root@192.168.0.13 (example ip address) and the password is volumio

It really is simple.

Well you can attach a screen and keyboard and access the RPi console directly or you can use a separate PC / Mac and SSH into it over your local network...on a Mac its easy, open up a terminal session (located in utilities or other depending on OSX version) and use ssh pi@192.168.1.108 (assuming Volumio installed) or whatever the address is for your RPi. The password is raspberry

For windows you have to muck around with a program called PuTTY

If this all sounds too daunting it may be easier to just use a USB thumb drive / stick formatted to FAT and copy your music tracks over to it and just plug it in!

This afternoon, I had a spare couple of hours and decided to setup the PI and connect it via USB to my Caiman DAC. Well I needed to sort some of the cabling out on the amplifier anyway

I decided to go with the RuneAudio distribution instead of volumio. First hurdle was trying to connect the PI to my Western Digital NAS drive with 2.3 Terabytes of apple lossless files. RuneAudio was easy to navigate, but I could not get it to successfully connect to the NAS share to see my files.

To cut a long story short.... after 3 hours of searching on Google I discovered the problem!!! On adding my NAS to the Library source I was omitting to add a final slash to the directory structure in the box labelled Remote Directory

I was following various threads and typing in media/Music because I could see the share under Windows as \\192.168.0.15\media\Music I thought it was enough to simply swap the windows backslash to the Linux forward slash. Nope, what I needed to type into the Remote Directory box was media/Music/ note the all important slash at the end !

Not sure whether this will make sense, but if you are trying to connect to a NAS box for your library source, and keep getting the error message Mount.failed (22) invalid argument consult the manual you may find that simply adding an extra / to the end of the remote directory might solve it.

YMMV but it worked for my Western Digital MyBookLive which is an excellent piece of inexpensive kit. I just wish the error message in RuneAudio was a little bit more informative to a Windows luddite like me.

Just one thing regarding RuneAudio. If you have installed the distribution from the iqaudio site ( http://www.iqaudio.com/downloads/ ) it is already preconfigured for working with the pi-dac. However, if you have installed the distro from the runeaudio site, you should activate the i2s driver manually through the command line interface (ssh/putty), changing some lines in /boot/config.txt. If you already know this, apologies for these needless details.

I see that the next release of Moode Audio (v1.9) will have built in support for BBC radio stations. I downloaded 1.8 over the weekend and the interface seems to be getting a lot of development work - This seems to be the one to watch at the moment...

Does anyone know if the SD images available from IQAudio have any bearing sonically over what I did which was simply copy the Volumio image to the card? - Just a thought.

IMHO (without having and trying Pi-DAC) the same will be with the IQaudio distro, referring to the manual, p.19: http://www.iqaudio.com/downloads/IQaudIO.pdf . The picture there says "Card: IQaudIODAC" without "+"
