ok, got the rpi2, sd card (with noobs pre installed), psu, wifi dongle and my HDD full of toonz... can I do any initial set-up up bits now or do have to wait for the IQDac?

Err if you want to hear music it is best to wait untill you have a DAC either IQdac or one connected via USB. No DAC no sound. You will also need a player i.e. Volumio, RuneAudio, Moode etc of your choosing.

I really think this will be a challenge for many AoS members who want what rPi offers but don't know how to make it work (or fix it when it doesn't).

The guy who was thinking he can sell/supply preconfigured Rpis may not have thought it through.

A warning to the curious. I work with computers and have found myself stretched. If you don't ever do more than turn your computer on and cry for help when it goes wrong it is best you think twice about what Marco is enthusing about. It may not be for you

I have sound working through the headphone jack. This is Rasberry Pi, Volumio and no add on DAC. I echo what Alan says. Four hours in set up but got there in the end. Couldn't connect to NFS server. It was the / that did it for me.

Scroll down to NAS mounts. Note there is no leading "/" character in the Remote directory name.

I'd say there is a good case to create a sticky in this forum re: advice/tips on RPi+Volumio+DAC setup.

Indeed, but do bear in mind that what I'm "enthusing" about is simply its sound quality (which given the price is phenomenal), as this is after all a hi-fi forum. Plus, there is plenty of help available here now (and elsewhere on other forums) to collectively assist newbies and the 'technically challenged' to overcome most problems.

Therefore, all in all, considering the huge sonic and musical benefits that can be had, I don't think there's any good reason for folk to be scared of 'dipping their toes into the Pi pool'. With a wee bit of effort, you will be amply rewarded!

Btw, Alan, on another issue, regarding Spotify, I carried out a fresh install of Volumio and have now managed to get it to appear on the 'Browse' menu, along with my NAS and Webradio.

However, although Spotify is listed, it is still 'inactive', as I can't actually use it to access my Spotify account. How did you manage to get Spotify to work, with Volumio, once you got it to appear in the 'Browse' menu?

I now have my version in my system, sounding very good, i am currently using it wireless as i dont have a wired connection any where near my system, since its only sending the commands from my laptop through the router, and not the music information [which is stored either on memory sticks, or hard drive connected directly to my pi] then i cant see why it matters. Count me among the trepidatious ....
I am waiting for my Pi recipe ingredients to arrive but getting quite anxious reading the reports on here of folks struggling. There seem to be particular problems with Mac set up (which is what I have)
Being a Mac user for a couple of decades I'm used to things not being straightforward with new kit although I must say most of the struggles were in the distant past.

Anyone know of a good walk through that is NOT Windows based ??

This is what I'm seeing, Mike.

The problems that people are facing with the initial setup I think is putting some people off and confusing the hell out of others. But with something like this I'm afraid it's simply the nature of the beast and you have to be in it to win it.

As for mac users, I'm not a mac user for the exact reason you state, there is generally another layer of setup woe with mac stuff, always has been. Sometimes it's fine but more often than not macs are generally that little bit more tricky. For me I prefer ease of function over style.
