Progress - I flashed the SD card.

Now I'm trying to get in and set up the R Pi/Volumio. Getting nothing from the IP finder app. I have a USB cable and an ethernet cable, but don't know how to get in from there. Typing volumio.local isn't getting me anywhere.

Assuming you've done things in this order:

Insert the SD Card into the Device
Plug the Ethernet Cable
Connect any other device you may want to use (USB HUB, Wi-Fi Dongle, etc.)
Power the device on

Then did you see both the power LED light up, and then the second flashing activity LED?

The Rpi should be visible on your network, but only if your router is set to dish out IP addresses to computers via DHCP. You should be able to see the IP allocated to your Rpi by connecting to your router's admin pages. If RPi's address, e.g. 192.168.1.20, then just point browser for example to http://192.168.1.20

If no go, then I'd suggest you ensure your router is set to use DHCP, turn the Rpi power off. Now it's important to reflash the SD card as it may have been corrupted after pulling the plug in the RPi without a proper shutdown. Now go through the setup again.

Thanks for all this. The network environment is a wee bit complicated - BT Home Hub 5 which has wifi enabled on 2.5 and 5 ghz (two separate SSIDs) plus an ethernet connection to a BT 500 powerline wifi extender - the NAS is connected via ethernet to this and it also provides a wifi boost in the living room where the hifi is as it's a long way from the phone/broadband socket in the wife's study.

As-is, plugging to the second ethernet socket on the extender, or on any of the three remaining ethernet sockets, isn't resulting in anything showing up in the router tables and no result with volumio.local. Power lights are coming on (I'm providing power from the laptop via USB to enable me to move around).

I'll strip everything off apart from the orignal router with just one ethernet cable out to see if that helps. Will also flash again, didn't realise they were so sensitive. I have a wifi dongle but no point in fitting that I guess till I can see the thing on a wired connection.

I wonder if you have enough juice to the RPi in that case. Actually, is this even safe? I would have thought the the current limit of your lapto port could be exceeded, especially if you plug the USB wireless dongle into the RPi. A decent RPi supply should be 5v 2a.

The rpi is like any other computer, it's not good just to pull the plug on it. Once you're up and running, you need to get into the habit of "halting" the RPi via the web browser and then waiting 30 secs before switching the power off.

I have measured my Raspberry Pi 2 with the IQAudio PiDac+ fitted and it consumes 330 mA.
This is with no other peripherals attached eg. usb devices or HDMI

Thanks this got me checking, the SD card reader won't light up! (No wonder it's not booting). I switched to the 5v PSU I bought but it's still not lighting up - looked at it - 0.3A. Need a better PSU. The board lights come on but clearly not enough juice to do anything else. Over to Maplins tomorrow!

I think Krisbee is right... it needs a leat 5v / 2A. If you have an iphone / android phone charger just use that. The "link" LED should light up if there is enough juice.

PS any USB charger with 2 or more Amps should do.
