Does anyone control the RPi with a tablet device other than an Apple? There are plenty of other makes out there. I'm just not an Apple person you see.

Volumio/Moode/Rune are all controlled from a browser window so use any tablet you want...you can even control picoreplayer/max2play via a browser but you interface with LMS instead and not the RPi directly...these last two work better via an app though.

I had a used Volumio install, Spotify would not work, and an unused one. The latter now has Spotify working.

I see what you mean... I'll see if I can be arsed installing a fresh version of Volumio. TBH, they should get these things right, and sort out any issues FIRST, before the system goes live, so that folk can just get on with using and enjoying what should be something that's straightforward and simple!

Anyone got Spotify connect working on the Pi yet ?

I have installed Volumio version 1.55 on a SD card, and Spotify worked straight away, wired and wireless. The Spotify search works a treat, but I still can't browse my through tracks on my playlist…
The sound quality is fantastic as well, for some 320 Kbs files, the resolution is staggering… I am still waiting to get my NAS sorted, then we will pull out the big Hi res guns!

There is now a Volumio app available for Android which I find works quite nicely, but I've gone with a slightly different solution that doesn't use the Volumio interface and gives me a LOT more flexibility in how I browse and what I can send to the Pi (this will work for a Pi running Volumio/Rune/Moode or any players that can accept a uPNP connection:

All of my music is stored on a Netgear ReadyNAS and on this I run a lightweight media server called MinimServer: http://minimserver.com/downloads/ - There are also versions for QNAP and Synology NAS drives available as well as Windows, Mac and Linux.

With Minimserver sharing my music over uPNP, I can now run any uPNP app on my mobile devices to control it - I use BubbleuPNP on my Nexus 7 tablet and on my Android phone connected over the wireless network. This connects to Minimserver which gives me the list of all of my music and playlists (and this is highly configurable so that you can sort your music exactly as you want it displayed with artwork, sorted by year, album etc. and sort artists names by last name, first name if you want to which was the real clincher for me). On the other side of your connection is the 'renderer', telling BubbleuPNP where to send the music you click, so my Pi is chosen as the renderer (you can send to multiple devices or just have your mobile device as the renderer which is very handy for being sat with your headphones on anywhere in the house), so clicking on a song/album chooses it from the NAS and tells the NAS to send it to the Pi (the music is not streamed via the mobile device, it's a direct connection between NAS and Pi).

What I really love about this setup is that I can have all of the new BBC HD radio streams saved into a playlist as Minimserver is happy to access these streams and send them to the Pi and these sound great.

So if you find the Volumio interface a bit limiting and want something a bit nicer with tags sorted properly, album artwork displays, FAST navigation, proper playlist handling, and multi-device capability, have a look at this.

Oh and I didn't mention that you can also stream from a load of cloud and streaming services with it too - Tidal, Google Play music, Napster, Deezer and a load of others are all supported.

I almost reached for miniserver to replace LMS after the BBC switched from AAC to HLS radio streams. Once the fixes for LMS and some of its plugins appeared, I forgot about it. I was under the impression that decent upnp renders for Linux were few and far between and hadn't realised MPD had a upnp plugin/patch. So this looks like a very useful alternative, assuming you don't need some of the other LMS plugins like BBC iplayer, with a straightforward way to make the RPi into upnp renderer using Volumio, and freely available control apps for your table/phone. Must try this out ..

PS Useless things have changed, one of the weak points of MPD is the amount of network traffic sent to the client app when scrolling through lists, hence navigation of large music libraries/playlist can be slow.

I've finished adding another stage of regulation to my DIY supply for the RPi and think it has improved slightly from before. The Pre-Tracking reg on the ALWSR board now has an easier time and is fed a cleaner supply, I 'scoped the o/p and there's precious little noise on the 5v line to speak of...not bad for about £25 in parts
