Yes I suspect that's the case, and if so, I won't be going there, as it's beyond my knowledge or desire not to fuck up things.

There is an app named PlugPlayer, available for Mac, iOS and Android. It must be installed on your Mac and you should do nothing to the RPi (except to enable the UPNP settings on the RPi). I use it with my ipad and it works flawlessly. It is a paid app, but costs just a few quids. The RPi acts as a DMR (digital media renderer) and can be controlled by PlugPlayer. When you start the app, it investigates the net music storages and the players, connected to your network. Just choose the storage and the player. It shows the album art, creates playlists and so on. Great fun...
That sounds interesting and less 'invasive' than fannying around with SD cards. Do you purchase it from the iTunes store?
