it's an excellent all rounder. if you manage to source both transformers, 8020 and 8030, you can actually cover all the needs you may have with different pickups. there's actually the third model too, 8025, just very seldom.

there's a room for a tweak there because the signal goes through rather complicated by-pass switch that lies on a small board. i don't think anyone needs that and i'm pretty convinced that removing this circuit may elevate luxman performance to the level of the best ortofon silver transformers from the 80s.
Yes. I have doubts about unnecessary switches in equipment and have been known to bypass them. I may bridge the switching for comparison.

(by the way, you double posted so I removed one for you )

I would be more excited in these personally

Heard this set up years ago and thought they were very good indeed. My guess these need recapped now as they ran pretty hot. The matching phonostage and CD player are very good too.

I think this was the same pair discussed at length on the "Bargains on eBay" thread here... so I wonder if it was a genuine listing or not?

are, at the moment a bit more reasonably priced...I'd be asking if the treble horns are still functioning, but if so, and they just need re foaming, Billy Bargain. You can get original treble diaphragms on ebay, but they're not cheap. Might still be worth it though.

I have Urei 811's, bigger than these with 15" drivers (809's are 12") and after a little restoration and modification, they're very good indeed. Urei's were designed to be soffit mounted, so work well positioned right in to corners, unlike most hi-fi speakers. Working well, fed a clean signal (and they'll obligingly make you aware if its not), they're an intoxicatingly open window and dynamically will show a clean pair of heels to most speakers.
Picked these up yesterday and gave em a brief test today. Drivers functioning both bass and treble, so foams are on order. One cabinet is poorer than the the other, but as it happens I already have an orphan single 809, so between the three I should be able to build a very nice pair. Plenty about them on Lansing Heritage site - they're a JBL 2214 woofer with a JBL 2416h compression horn, not a million miles from the driver configuration in the rather desirable JBL 4425 studio monitor, but obviously arranged as a dual concentric (or coaxial as the Americans would have it). And with a time aligned crossover, these should sound really good (on Lansing Heritage they say as good as the big Ureis, just less loudness capability).

That was cheap. I didn't see them for sale, luckily for you. They were only five minutes from me.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

    I think you're right.

Amendment - Just noticed they went for a shade over six grand. I hope for the purchaser's sake, it's a genuine sale.
