Headphone amp for AKG 701

Have just ordered a Capella which seems to have remarkable features for the money!

I was also going to give a shout to the NJC, which looks to be beautifully made inside with top quality components. There's also headphone amps based on a small power amp design, rather than a chip output, and these would be better with some of the less sensitive headphones out there I think (the HD600's I once had were horrible on the end of a typical headphone outlet socket I remember).

Technology has moved on Dave. The HD600 and K701 are dead easy to drive with modern designs. The antiquated power amp designs can produce loads of wattage, but the K701 only needs 200mW for full power output. The rest of the power is just eye candy with its big heatsink and 100W mains transformer. It's also about bulking up the weight, as they do with meat by adding water. I don't have time for fleecing of my customers with those sort of things.

I had a Cayin Ha-1a and it worked a treat. Fantastic valve amp easily able to drive the K701's and plenty of tube rolling options.
Stanley is the dealer here but most people understand and accept the K701's are hard to drive. I have a Little dot now and it works well with the AKG's but just doesn't have the drive/grip/control soundstage etc that the more expensive amp had. In my experience in most applications a more powerful amp with heavy Traffo's work better be it speakers or headphones. Of course if you have horns or low impedance headphones things might be different

I am also aware that the K701 are hard to drive. Don't assume that I don't. I own a K701 after all.
I am also aware that the ridiculously low price of the Capella might give the impression that it is not in the same league as far more expensive headphone amps, and that it is not very powerful. That's my fault really for pricing it at not more than manufacturing cost plus a tiny profit. So my pricing structure could well be at fault here. Expensive headphone amps are selling well. The markups are healthy as well.
