I'll bring my Halide Bridge USB to SPDIF & power supply along when I visit, it'll interface with the Raspberry Pi without the need for drivers. Your Sony has two inputs anyway, so can switch with CD & file-based audio of the same.

Tell that to your average 15 year old...
Nice rare vinyl I can see the nicety of owning that.
But CDs? They just occupy space and once on a hard drive that's backed up I'd say they are more freakin' reliable anyway. I HATE optical drives. They are a constant source of non-working with all discs pain. And they do not last in an awful lot of casea and become so outdated they cannot be replaced.

My wife has just got a sonic jewelery cleaner. Apparently it can be used to clean CDs. I wonder about cartridges? Diamond could fall of I guess... that'd be fun. Not! Might work though but conventional methods are best I suspect.

I love CD physical media, I guess it's what I grew up with.
We are currently going through what vinyl went through in the 80s - I picked up all of Kruder & Dorfmeister's back-catalogue & spin-off projects for £16 incl. P&P a couple of weeks ago - CD, tape, DAT, whatever, physical media has its appeal.
