Sorry to sound obtuse, but the way I interpreted what Elias said is they chose 110kHz because there are no chips available which convert above that rate without certain compromises which they preferred not to make.
In another post in the same thread, he says that when such a chip becomes available, they'll be incorporating it into a new design as soon as possible.

There have been chips available that convert above that rate and have the problem sorted. The 2007 release of the WM8716 went largely unnoticed. I am happy to say that it did not escape me, and I am using it in the Beresford Caiman. The WM8716 even has a dual mode feature, which allows for the use of two of them with each one decoding one channel. It also samples at 64x, which produces a fraction of the errors that are found in the 8x OS chips. I don't quite understand all the manufacturer's explanation, so you would have to look at their datasheet for further clarification.

I did test the Caiman against both the previous and the latest DAC1. The WM8716/LM4562 combination is superior to the PCM179x/NE5532. Or your money back, including postage.

I'm not trying to question the design of your DACs, I just like to understand things I read. If a reply would be too lengthy or reveal any trade secrets then feel free not to answer.

Don't worry. I don't mind answering sensible questions if it helps others to also get to grips with why my lowly priced DAC is able to produce such good results.

? Do the opamps on the TC-7520 need upgrading? Not in my opinion, but it's a personal choice that some have made.

Caiman eh? I might have missed this new beast elsewhere on the forum. When will this new Caiman be available? Or am I confused and is this identical to the $75 more expensive Beresford 7520 that's on the US & UK Beresford webpages (that's ~25% more if my math is correct).

And is there a good story behind the name?

The Caiman is a TC-7520 with a new generation DAC chip and opamps. The TC-7520 uses a DAC chip from Texas Instruments, and opamps from JRC. The Caiman uses a DAC chip from Wolfson and opamps from National Semiconductors.
It's a small production run, consists of a number of modification suggestions for the TC-7520, and will only be available from me.
