Well good luck! Last time I saw a Breuer arm go up for auction it was even silly-er money, might even have gone to £2000? Can't remember, might have been £1400.

Ebay is NOT the place to buy rare and sought-after tonearms.. perhaps the Alphason is just catching up with those kind of prices. Get some hype going (deserved in some cases like this) as the Alphason has had over the years, lots of mentions of being good then people putting up wanted ads for them etc etc and eventually it plays out in prices. Still, that was a high price.. Used to be £250 - 300, then £400 odd now around £500 on average. Network effect gets people talking about and then recommending the same arms over and over yet there weren't enough sold probably to feed that demand (especially when people hoard hifi!) .

I dont understand the logic - He's removed the mains transformer which he could have got custom made for under £250 devaluing the amp by £500+

Completed auctions suggests that Leak Stereo 20s are worth £410 - £460. All asking prices of £750 odd have failed over and over, a £595 BIN failed.. A case of hopeful BINs hyping the price whilst auctions better reflect real value.

That looks like the one, but look at the price he's charging.

£85 + £175 + a little DIY refurb time = a nice Leak Stereo 20 for £260 !

If they were worth more or I had more spare cash, that sounds like a good deal!

I wouldn't turn that down for the sake of not liking overpaying £40 on the transformer.. £200 profit lost for the sake of £40?

That's how my mind thinks anyway...

Last time I saw a Breuer Type 8 arm for sale in the classified ads, they were asking £2,000. They always were rarae aves.

I paid £300 for mine (a Type 5), but that was back in the early '80s.

I've never heard one myself.. Still someone on wigwam bought one for £800 via an aquaintance, so it's still possible!

I bet the Brinkmans are just as good (normally ~ £1300 secondhand) but I plumped for the Sumiko MDC 800 which is a Breuer copy, though probably a 5 copy, but with more funky design and very nice sounding for the little while I actually had mine set up.. Picked mine up for £400 with a broken EMT cart attached, paid for by selling my previous one on for slightly more, so kind of an indirect swap ..

Wish I could justify buying it... I remember Howard Popeck on here or elsewhere saying he bought the Brinkmann over a new Breuer type 8 but that was over Mr Breuer being difficult and a pain to deal with compared to Brinkmann.

I was probably exagerating though a little - I bet quite a few nice rare arms go under the radar often enough, just when the right people spot them they can go crazy.
