Generally I've never got on with Iain Banks' writing style, kind of not visual enough for me.

As an aside, I'm intrigued to know what sort of person uses a non-working Amstrad system with all the control knobs removed "for display in our flat"!

Have to agree. I have tried several times to read Iain Banks' books but have never enjoyed them and abandoned the attempts. Perhaps being bought up on the 'classics' like Clarke, Asimov, McCaffrey and Herbert have spoilt me for lesser mortals.

I doubt it as well, there's a few well known flaky transistors in this model, my guess would be them, however get it for a couple of hundred quid, be prepared to chuck another £200 for parts for the restoration and you have probably the best vintage integrated on your hands, also the last one I restored sold for £900.

A friend had a pair of the first AE1s driven by Naim 135s and fronted by a Xerxes with Koetsu Black. To describe the system as 'in yer face' would be an understatement!
