I was thinking about my Phono stage and MC step up and how I could get them both in one box so I opened up the Lentek step up and the MC circuit board and components are all in a potted cube so I removed it from the box and wired it into my little PP phono box, the MC is powered by a PP9 battery which are crap so I bought a little 9.9V lipo battery

Well although I was happy with the end result I had a Hum , I tried every combination of earthing arrangements and the mains lead is shielded but nothing changed it as the problem is just the proximity of the transformer, If I turn the module on its side or put some metal shielding in between it reduce quite a bit but was not silent

So spurred on by Ken Quinn’s wonderful DIY Battery powered Phono stage I was at a car booty and spotted a couple of yausa 12v batteries for £3 each so I snapped them up and was please when I got them home that my 5 stage battery charger indicated they were fine
So I ripped out the power supply from the box and wired in the batterys

The batteries wont fit in the box so I stuck them down the side my rack

Sound Quality
As soon as the needle hit the record of Joe Cockers Sheffield steel album I new this was special the phono stage was now silent and the sound stage and dynamics had opened right up.
So I am well chuffed and will get a couple of smaller gell batteries to fit in the case at a later stage.
I measured the current output from each battery at 6ma so these 4.7AH should last about 6 months

Yes Reel 2 Reel can be excellent with the right machine and good tape its analogue and very natural, it does have a bit of a bass lift but that’s always welcome
My Tascam BR 20 sounds excellent with Maxell UDXL tape. Tape is expensive now and I have thrown out a few reels with sticky shed (beware of old Ampex / Quantegy).
The Teac 3440 is very good and would suit a musician as you can tape on all 4 tracks individually, overdub and simul sync. I have only used it for 2 track play back.
I also have a Revox PR99 mk1 in sick bay and I will have to make time to repairing one day?, it will be interesting to compare it to the Tascam?
I also have an AKAI ?25 in a box in the loft somewhere which sounded very good and the glass heads dont wear out.
The Tascam cassette deck is also faulty as the speed is fast so its in bits in my work shop and it need the motor speed controller recapping as that is supposed to fix this fault, again its finding the time.
Last year I spotted a mint Nak BX150E in a second hand shop for £39 so I use that for now and its good but just not in the same league as Reel to Reel

You can allways pop round any time for a listen as well, I would like to hear your Ming Da amp in my system one day as well if possible.

Michell Gyro Deck with Orbe platter and HR power supply is the latest edition to my HIFI
The arm is an Audiomods Rega Am Kit which I think is excellent and the cart is a AT 33EV
All in all its still not as good as my Garrard 401 but with the recent addition of the Audiomods
arm its getting closer, I’m going to try the Otofon KP-b on it shortly and see if that also improves it again
I like the look of the deck and want to like it more than my Garrard but I’m not kidding myself
