Music Collections: How Do You Store Yours?

I have about 1000 lp's i guess so modest collection.
Mine are just grouped into genre and i just remember where abouts they are.

I do this twice, seperate groups for 'cleaned' and 'uncleaned' as incoming vinyl usualy outpaces the rate of cleaning.

CD's are thrown in a box, never put back in the case. Once a year or so i empty the box, pile up the discs, then try and find the 2 broken halves of the original case.
Then i wonder where all the missing cases are and where the missing discs are.
Sometimes ill swap cases around to use the non broken cases to which ive lost the CD.
There all fu**ed apart from the ones ive never played.

When they no longer read properly i scrub them with toothpaste.
When there too scratched for that to work i run them over the bench mounted polishing mop with some metal polishing compound.
Anything too deep for that gets wet flatted out then polished.
I used to put them in the barrel polisher for 4 or 5 hours but no longer have access to industial polishing machines.

Blimey Graeme, you really do have ingenious cleaning methods...

Yes, it is a publicity photo but you would not believe the number of houses I've been in when house-hunting where the books are shelved by spine colour - all the Penguins together, all the Macmillans etc. Such people do exist.

I once had the whimsical idea of arranging my books in some sort of colour coordinated pattern: a block of blue-spined Pelicans, followed by a block of black-spined Penguin Classics, followed by a block of grey-spined Penguin Modern Classics, followed by orange-spined Penguins, ......

It looks jolly nice that way. Don't think I could stand the LPs that way though as they get used rather more often than the books. I am totally disorganised in everything I do so actually getting the books in order is much harder for me than just putting one back in the right colour.
