I rarely put the classical music I play on this thread, because it's all a bit humdrum & my knowledge is pants! But Martin said something on the other Spinning Today, so this is just to let you know that I'm spinning this at the moment:

Rimsky Korsakov - Le Coq D'or and Tsar Saltan Suites / Dobrowen and the Philharmonia Orch. on an old mono HMV Concert Classics

Was it my comment about few AoS members liking classical music? It's only statistics and mirrors real life: I have hardly any friends who listen to it.

Thanks to incredible service from Igloo, I collected this from the Post Office today. It's a lovely recording with excellent playing. Hearing Shostakovich like this is enlightening and much of it is quite playful. An interestingly different rendition from the piano.

The atmosphere and sense of space as each track starts, and before the organ enters, is palpable. Good bass, as you say, but doesn't plumb the depths of the giant Ruffattis like the ones in Garden Grove Community Church (below) and Davies Symphony Hall.

Another charity CD. I was very much enjoying this collection last night when up pops a post from Alex saying he'd like to buy it. Damn - I thought I was going to keep this one, too!

Jeezus - now *THAT* is a BIG organ!!

Anyway, glad you like the Shossy. What captivates me most about that recording is the natural ambience portrayed and the way that the acoustic of the church is captured so effectively, all adding to the sense of musical occasion. The organ sounds are also uncannily lifelike.

On a system like yours, you should hear where I'm coming from

There are many very fine recordings of this symphony, but this one is laugh-out-loud exhilarating. After a very slow and portentous intro to the 1st mvt, the performance explodes into life!

What an absolutely EXCELLENT recording and storming performance, Jerry. This might just have been your recommendation of the year. Thanks!
