Lol... Trust me, James, you wouldn't be saying that if you heard them here! Your description of their sound is totally alien to me, with CD or vinylHehe, on the end of some very fine [IMO] transistor amps they sounded boxy, coloured & harsh with no treble. I never tried them with valves myself but I do agree, valve amps can & often do make poor speakers more palatable

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, I'm starting to suspect something was amiss as from my experience of them I initially found it shocking anyone liked them... They really were that bad! Nice pair of IMF TLS50 Mk.II transmission line speakers, in Surrey. These deserve the 'Classic' description. They were IMF's domestic sized (just about) TL floorstanders at the time and sounded pretty spectacular.

There is so much vintage gear around that gets unfairly panned today by the uninitiated, simply because it has been heard in the wrong context - and moreover, because its performance was held back by the inferiority of some of the equipment that would've originally partnered it during the same era
That's one of the reasons, for example, why the humble old Goldring G800 cartridge (or Shure M3D) can sound superb, partnered with modern phono stages, preamps, cables, etc, which no longer hobble it. There are many more examples I could quote of this, with vintage amps, speakers, turntables - all sorts!
