Tennstedt's EMI Mahler 3rd is my benchmark for interpretation and sonics. Wowzer!
-- get the individual double CD album, if you are interested, not the budget boxset of the complete symphonies, tempting though that is. The boxset sonics are way below par compared to the original release - EMI really b*ggered up the remastering or whatever they did.
I tried the LPs as well, nope, the original CDs are way better. Surprising, but true, ime.

I've had this for a few years, and every now and then I try some symphonies again.
Tried again last night.
I've finally given up - beloved by many, but I just don't enjoy Simpson's 'soundworld'.
Now on fleaBay if anyone is interested.
