on LP. Lovely performance, I do love Ferras' playing.



LP again -- listened to the Mendelssohn. I often find the concerto a bit weak and watery, but Ricci injects sufficient passion and energy to make it interesting again!

On CD, fantastic in-the-room sound quality, too.

Happens less frequently in classical, Jerry, but when it does it makes you wince. In the case of 1980s DG, I think they basically f*cked up the recordings so there is no rescuing them.

Enormous fun, the Australian version of Peter & the Wolf (Peter and the Shark) is particularly entertaining. Great writing by Carl Davis.

It's barely mid-Feb, but I'm confident this will be in my Top 5 new CDs this year, quite possible Numero Uno.
Just sumptuously scrumptuously gorgeous!



And another glorious CD - quite Shostakovich-ian, especially the 2nd concerto. The 1st concerto is brim-full of marvellous melody and colourful orchestration.
Simply a fabulous recording of wonderful Russian music.

That is such a wonderful recording! I think the way that they do the "Lauda Jerusalem" illustrates how different an approach they've taken to the whole work. Most recordings really hit the "lauda" hard; this one is silky smooth. As for the Magnificat; is there anything more perfect under heaven?
