Putting on a lot of vinyl tonight: Sibelius 7 (Beecham), a stunning Columbia "2-eye" of Horowitz playing Chopin, Mihaud conducting Mihaud,
the Richter Prokofiev 5, and, earlier today, the CD of the Solti Das Reingold.
And Dark Side of the Moon on SACD.
Only 1:26 am, just finished watching the Sheffield comback in the FA Cup, so hopefully I can make it another hour before I fall asleep!

Something very special for Shostakovich fans ....
A kind of double-bill DVD - the Borodin string quartet play Shosty string quartet no. 2 and Beethoven's string quartet Op. 59/2 live in concert in Russia in very good stereo sound.
Superb.
But the best bit is the other half of this double bill -- a masterclass given by Valentin Berlinsky, the cellist of the Borodin quartet. He tutors the Dominant Quartet - a foursome of rather attractive young ladies --
They practice sections of Beethoven's quartet op 18/4, under Berlinsky's guidance, and then play the entirety of Shosty quartet no. 8.
Utterly stunning. Berlinsky is moved to tears by the Shosty.
Berlinsky also reminisces about the time, as a student group, the Borodin quartet played for Shosty himself in his apartment - the 1st time Shosty had ever heard the music played -- awesome, just awesome.

Sadly, the audio and video are a bit out of synch in my copy of the masterclass .... Nonetheless, wonderful!

Like you, I am a fan of the Borodin Quartet. I think (if you do not already have it) that you might like to hear then playing the two Borodin Quartets On HMV Molodiya (Cat No ASD 4100) from 1980. I love this record and imo it would justify the purchase of a turntable on its own.

This double CD set arrived yesterday.
Basically, a 2 hour suite for concert performance, by Howard Shore.
It was recorded live in Lucerne last year.
I was quite disappointed to start with, the music making doesn't have the verve, tension and excitement of the film soundtrack -- but I've played the 1st disc twice now, and it's growing on me!
Sigh.

I much enjoyed the Elgar violin concerto reported on recently, so I thought I'd have another go at this disc, having previously owned it and discarded it.
I dunno -- he just seems uninvolved and just skims thru this wonderful music.
Widely touted (by the advertising guys!) as Violinist of the (20th) Century - I guess I am still missing the point!
