The Flying Lizards - 'Money (That's What I Want)'

'Money (That's What I Want)' was a 1959 hit single by Barrett Strong & was co-written by Berry Gordy of Tamla Motown. It was also covered by The Beatles, The Kingsmen (of 'Louie Louie' fame) and also the Stones (hold that thought).

It was used by Taco Bell in their TV adverts for pseudo-Mexican food. One of the (ahem) nutritious and delicious options on offer at said fast food chain might well be something like a burrito.

I understand that some airlines are thinking of introducing this wonderful delicacy into their in-flight food services and that, curiously, it is the favourite food of many male siblings.

Now then, Gram Parsons co-wrote 'Wild Horses' with Keith Richards and the Stones recorded it for their album 'Sticky Fingers'.

Sticky Fingers is what you might get if you don't eat your Burrito carefully. However, it's also the name of a restaurant in London, which is owned by Bill Wyman.

You know where I'm going with this, don't you?
That's right! Hey hey, I've just checked the menus of our Bill's place and he sells Burritos!!!!

He also does a 'Beggar's Banquet', which is a 20 quid ribs & chicken monster plate (rather than a place in the queue at the soup kitchen down the street!) Sadly, there is no 'Goat's Head Soup' on offer though.

One intriguing, dish on the menu is the Cajun Blackened Salmon, which sort of reminds me of:

Cajuns (les Cadiens or les Acadiens), are an ethnic group mainly living in the U.S. state of Louisiana, consisting of the descendants of Acadian exiles (French-speakers from Acadia in what are now the Canadian Maritimes). Today, the Cajuns make up a significant portion of south Louisiana's population, and have exerted an enormous impact on the state's culture.

Fairport Convention sang about a Cajun Woman on their album “Unhalfbricking”. On this album there is a beautiful track titled ‘A Sailor’s Life’, that finishes with a superb piece of drum playing by Martin Lamble.



“A Sailor's Life starts as a plaintive lament on the fickleness of sailors and the agonised waiting endured by their sweethearts until their return. The terrible irony of her rather bitter condemnation of the sailor's life as 'merry' is brought home by the subsequent tragedy. The singer extols her beloved's virtues before she sets off to find him. She hails a passing ship and is told that he is feared drowned. Beside herself with grief and despair, she runs her boat against a rock. This could be seen as a metaphor for another tragedy as she takes her own life.

The song then echoes the stormy course of the bereaved woman's grief, as it takes off into a passage of terrific ensemble playing, all instruments interweaving, building to an overwhelming intensity, before settling to a sombre resolution. There are echoes of everything from dirges to hornpipes in an extraordinary composition.”

I have been told that this was done in a single take, and for me, whenever I hear the track I think of it as a testament and tribute to Lamble who died shortly afterwards; killed in a traffic accident whilst the Farports were en route to a gig.


Sailors need entertaining during their long spells at sea, so The Smashing Pumpkins thoughtfully produced a whole EP called Songs for a Sailor (Volume 3 of Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, a project inspired by the Tarot)

I would have liked to have cited their track ‘Dancing in the Moonlight’, dedicated to Jeff Buckley, but the “blue meanies” at EMI have prevented You Tube from hosting the clip, so I’ll leave you with ‘My Love is Winter’ from their album “Oceania” (as close as I can get to a nautical theme).

Leonard Cohen sang of a Winter Lady on his debut album which also contained a song called Suzanne.

Suzanne was the name of the orangutan in the 2001 film 'Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back' which contained cameos from Star Wars actors Mark Hammil and Carrie Fisher.

The Star Wars trilogy is a franchise with 3 good films and ever diminishing credibility and quality. Until recently, much the same could be said of the albums of the band 'Foo Fighters', who have recently redeemed themselves with the excellent album 'Wasting Light' (Lets see if the same can be said of Star Wars, I doubt it.)

Wasting Light contains the single 'White Limo' which involves the band being driven around in a limosine by Lemmy, with disastrous results.

AoS has grown a lot since this thread was started, but it still seems to be the same few people playing this brilliant game that Alex devised. It's not an exclusive club - anyone can have a go. In fact it should be a rule that your second post on AoS after the Welcome thread is in this one!

Just in case you've missed the rules of the game here, I'll let Alex explain (from his original post in this thread):

"........and like a lot of artists, it occurred to me that that there are lots of links between both these artists and others - so, the idea of this thread is to follow the previous post with another track, artist or album, with some sort of link (let's see how spurious they get!) - and explain why. Could be a "proper" link like X used to be in Y or something a bit more oblique".



So just find something that's connected in some way to 'White Limo' by The Foo Fighters. It doesn't have to be about the Foo Fighters - it could be about Limo's, or the colour white, or something like it.
We like tenuous links - we positively encourage them. But a simple, direct one is fine too. Be creative.....invent stuff....use the web to glean little nuggets of info, think in tangents. Have fun!

OK....so Foo Fighters sing about a "White Limo" that is driven in their music video by Ian Kilmister aka Lemmy.

Lemmy was born on Christmas Eve.

Hank Williams died on New Years Eve (or early New Years Day) in the back of a Limousine.......

His son Hank Williams jr sang a song called "Long Black Limousine" (as did Elvis)....did I have to link to a good song?

That song was first released in 1961 by Vern Stovall but it was written in 1968. The next year, Vince Taylor, thinking about limousines, recorded 'Brand New Cadillac' for a B-side, a song which is widely regarded as one of the first examples of British rock & roll.



The A-side of 'Brand New Cadillac' was called 'Pledgin' My Love'. Apparently this was not about applying furniture polish to his girlfriend. However, there is a musical connection to such household cleaning products. Here's part of an interview with Billy Joel:

Q: Is it true that after the failure of Attila you tried to kill yourself by drinking a bottle of furniture polish?

A: That’s true. Yeah, I was suicidal. I was 21. It’s a tough age. Things hit you really hard. A relationship with a girl had ended and I was devastated, and then it didn’t work out with the recording we did, and I just figured the world didn’t need another failed musician. You take yourself so seriously—you’ve got your head so far up your ass you can’t see straight.

Q: But why did you use furniture polish?

A: I was just lookin’ for poison. I looked in my mother’s closet and there was bleach, and it had the skull and crossbones, and then there was furniture polish. And at the time I thought, Well, the furniture polish will probably taste better than the bleach, so I’ll drink the furniture polish. And all I ended up doing was farting furniture polish for a couple of days and polishing my mother’s chairs.



The aforementioned Attila was a heavy rock band that our Billy had been in.
Now, I'm not saying he was obsessed with household cleaning products or anything, but it must be more than just coincidence that one of the tracks from their (truly awful) album was named after one.

soooooo... Cillit Bang, hey... an anagram of Cillit Bang is Acting Bill.

The Bill was a TV drama about the police (don't worry, not going there!) that lasted for 26 years, being canned in 2010. The pilot episode from 1984 was called Woodentop.

The Woodentops are a crtitically acclaimed British band, who emerged around the same time as The Bill, with their debut release in 1984. In 1987 Alice Thompson left the band to be replaced by Anne Stephenson of The Communards (no, not there either! )

Alice Thompson subsequently became a writer, with 5 novels published - the second of which was Pandora's Box - a name which was also used as the title for an Aerosmith box set (nope!) but also a single by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD)

In 1997 OMD founding member and lead singer Andy McKluskey also founded the girl group Atomic Kitten (yes really!) and co-wrote several of their singles, including their biggest hit, "Whole Again" But we can't have that - I'm enjoying the cleaning product link...

Atomic Kitten murdered various songs by covering them, including The Tide is High - a song which was also covered by Blondie in 1980. And of course, Tide is the name of a famous detergent.



So, in a roundabout way that could have been so much easier direct - but a lot less fun - I give you for your delectation Blondie - The Tide Is High
