I once had an amp that I could physically unplug from the mains and it would still play for about ten seconds (at lowish volumes) before any effect could be heard. Quite a neat trick I thought at the time.

It gives the noise the screen is stoping somewhere to go (simplistically).
I own a system largely powered by Naim (a bit modified in some cases) and have found subtle earthing changes to be clearly audible and often quite profound.
