It's just MDF that's painted red, but well-done. I inherited it from an audio buddy who went to a high-end setup.

The upcoming issue of HiFi Critic will discuss this subject in detail. Written by Paul Messenger.

So true. The issue for many I suspect is that this approach takes time and patience and does not suit the psyche of the "throw money at it and fit and forget brigade" who invariably haven't a clue about what they are trying to achieve (just my personal opponion of course). I have just spent many hours (I'm on leave) experimenting with stands and supports for my JR 149's - including making custom solid wood top plates and trying 3 different types/sizes/shapes of sorbothane - with and without top spikes etc etc. in all probably spent 7 or 8 hours but the changes all made a distinct difference to the sound - some good and some not so good. I've opted for 3 large sorbothane blocks placed on top of the Kan II stands with the JR 149's directly on top. This gives the cleanest bass and best PRaT - other combinations sounded muddy and veiled. So as Marco opines little things can and do have significant sonic effects but be prepared to spend time. Regarding supports best example of sonic effects was when I had an LP12 - Sound Advice my old dealer in Brum sourced a couple of solid wood open top tables based on the Linn jig - the deck sat in a shallow recess in the top - the entire base board was accessible from below - sounded better than anything else at any price but would probably make a Techy sound pants.

Well, but let's be fair.
This isn't an issue of me "throwing money" at a system. I carefully auditioned my system and built it over the span of two months, as I've noted elsewhere.
Let's not assume that I "haven't a clue" or assume that I belong to one side of a debate or another.
Let's assume a different set of facts: assume I was quite careful in component matching. Assume further that that I have, from time to time, tried different (but competent) equipment stands, and have heard no difference whatsover.
Assume that I'm happy and that I'm happy that you're happy with the way you spend your time on this hobby![]()

I'm Bob.
+1
And for almost ANY given subject......
Fair enough M8 but I refer you to the first line of my post - "the issue for MANY I suspect" etc etc. so safe to assume not targeted at any individual
I happen to think your speaker stands look the must nutsand I'm only to aware of the unintended consequences of my OCD

Easy to be diplomatic on AoS because people aren't angry about hi-fi, as on other boards.
Cheers,
JJ
