If we are on a thread drift about registration numbers this one made me smile at the time.

We where in Bamburgh in Northumberland for a few days away (ages ago, September 2010) and it's never easy finding a parking space in the village centre near the Victoria hotel in the evening and I spotted a space at the same time as the driver of the Black Discovery, the Discovery beat me to the space... then I noticed the registration number

Well, you can stick it up yer jacksies, personally (sic) I like private registrations... The one on my current car I bought for my daughter when she was born, and represents her birthday and initials - I think it is a really sweet gesture - when I buy her her first car, it will have a (then vintage) registration number on it that is very personal to her. (Plus having it on my car now causes much merriment as people try to work out the relevance to me...) I also have a very good one for my own initials, but that is on my wife's car, and again causes head-scratching as people can see it is a private number but bears no relation to her.

The figure might have been £3000 (I was rather a long time ago), but my father simply couldn't be fussed with all the bureaucracy and paperwork required to change a car's plate.

I reckon that "1 RHW" would be worth well over £10k these days - I'm no expert, just a hunch - but I love seeing a "classic" plate.

I see having a personal plate as rather like having an e-mail address for life. I never need change my plate irrespective of what car I drive and I never need change my e-mail address no matter which ISP I'm with or where I move. As for the paperwork, say what?

Fair 'nough matey - but in reality registrations are a pretty good investment these days.
