One of the best films from the last few years is on BBC2 tonight - The Lives of Others. Compulsive viewing with a very human message. Dark and disturbing in places, but utterly brilliant and for once that's not just my opinion .

I've now watched it, Tim, and it was superb and disturbing and made for some very uncomfortable viewing. Brilliantly portrayed and acted, with lots of original bugging equipment used by the Stasi. The very idea that such a regime survived on everyone spying on everyone else, with 'Big Brother' watching over it all, was conveyed with fantastic claustraphobia. What an awful place East Germany was, and how good that it finally crumbled.

My pleasure Martin, films of that calibre deserve recognition and its a mystery to me why so many people dismiss foreign language films. Really glad you enjoyed it.

The Keep [DVD rip from Laserdisc]



This film is a cult classic. It has many faults and the look of something that was hurriedly edited, but it's a Michael Mann film, and therefore something of interest. He is up there with Ridley Scott and Stanley Kubrick, in my estimation, for his cinematic vision. The soundtrack is by Tangerine Dream, the other good reason for watching it.

It's set in Romania during the second world war, where German soldiers move in to a mysterious Keep as a base for their operations, a move that they will come to regret. Something is in there, and it's not nice. It stars Scott Glenn and Jurgen Prochnow, and there's an early role for Gabriel Byrne.

The biggest problem you may have is actually getting hold of it - I am not aware of it ever having been released on DVD, certainly not on Blu-ray. It only seems to have been released on US VHS and Laserdisc.

This film desperately needs cut material restored to make full sense of the story, but I doubt that it will ever receive that much attention.

Seeing as you kind of reminded me i checked IMDB & i couldn't find what i was looking for RE Mr Mcclure

I'm just about 100% sure he starred in a film that involved him on the run from some rich guy that wanted his blood, not because he wanted to kill him - but it'd make the rich bloke immortal Apparently Mcclures' character never got ill & if i remember correctly he had a brother, though i'm not sure what happened to him

Been after this for years & i can't find a damn thing about it

I can't remember when i saw it, but it must be pre 1990 - possibly a lot earlier...

I just don't know why i can't find it on IMDB
