    Default The Bunnymen at Brum

last night I saw the Bunnymen at the Academy in Brum, performing the whole of their first two (and best IMHO), 'Crocodiles', & 'Heaven up Here', and several favourites as encores.

Both Ian McCulloch, & Will Sergeant were on top form, to a packed house, and thankfully the PA was excellent.

I remember buying 'Heaven up Here' the day Bothom and Willis destroyed the Aussies at Headingly...How appropriate that were battering them at the moment (come on KP just enough time for a triple tonight before we declare)...

...It also prompted me to play the old vinyl again, which reminded me how good my recently acquired denon DL-110 cartridge sounds...which was nice!
    Cheers, Will

    Arcade Fire @ the NEC

Top quality, they even managed to overcome that shed of a venue.

Also saw Squeeze at Birmingham Symphony Hall - excellent set. As previously mentioned GT has kept his fantastic voice and can still hit the notes.

Was at the War of the Worlds extravaganza at the Birmingham NIA last night - what a show; the ears are still buzzing and the chest vibrating

Can't really call it a concert, but went to a local recording of Radio 4's "I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue" last night - a great night out with a mate, a few beers, a nice curry and a lot of laughs.

Blimey I haven't been on this thread for a little while, catch up time:
    Since squeeze I have seen:

The Defiled - An extreme metal band that aren't very famous yet. It was a free concert courtesy of Metal Hammer magazine in a tiny venue with about 5 bands on, but it was The Defiled I went to see. They were excellent, and very entertaining to watch. We met them afterwards as well, very nice guys.

Madness - Saw these at the 02 academy Birmingham in the afternoon which was odd. Still no matter the time of day, they were excellent, and my only complaint was that they could have played for longer, and they didn't play Cardiac Arrest.... Still great atmosphere (I've never seen so many people wearing Fez's), and plenty of time to go out for a drink afterwards!

Fairport Convention - At the Tewkesbury Roses. Wow, now I've seen these before a few times, but this concert really was something else. Lets start with the support, Katriona Gilmore and Jamie Roberts. I've never heard of them before, but they were excellent. Jamie plays an acoustic guitar on his lap with a fingerstyle technique (Think Eric Roche but folky) and Katriona plays fiddle and mandolin and they both sing. It's somewhere between traditional folk and the kind of thing sung by Seth Lakeman and Jim Moray. They have recently released their first music video so here it is:

We met them afterwards and they were friendly and happy to chat away and sign for everyone.
Fairport played the whole of their Babbacombe Lee concept album before the interval which certainly a nice surprise, and came back to perform most of their amazing new album (Festival Bell - I heartily recommend it) and came out to meet and greet afterwards. My best concert in AGES.

Which brings me to Roxy Music, last night at the NEC. I have to say I was very disappointed. Before I start my moan fest, I must admit I was spoiled by the last time I saw them which was perfect. I saw them in around 2001, and they played the first 2 albums in their entirety, and most of the third. Tonight however, they focussed on their (in my opinion) mediocre 80s output, barely playing any of their 70s classics.... No Ladytron, no In My Dreamhome A Heartache, no Bogus Man... And they were a bit too slick for my liking, a bit like we were watching a Jools Holland show if you see what I mean, for most of the show there were 12 people on stage, when there needed to be maximum 5 or 6, there was the obligatory group of female backup singers that had lengthy great gig in the sky type sing offs (but crap) And there was a massive screen so bright that it made the performers basically silhouettes. Which would have been fine if the screen was showing close ups of them, which it was, but they were overlaid with artsy psychadelic images and graphics so you could barely make it out. But it wasn't all bad, the highlights for me were 'If There Is Something' 'Pyjamarama' and 'For Your Pleasure'.

Whew.... I think this might be my lengthiest ever post.

Default Richard Thompson at York Opera House

First time Richard has toured with a band for a few years .. He kicked off with a song from an early 70's album of his and had the house spellbound all night ....... Took my 18 yr old son who writes and has his own band .. he got the message loud and clear :-) and what is more .. absolutely loved the concert .. ..

"2010 has proved to be an extraordinary year for Richard Thompson culminating in the announcement that he has been awarded an OBE in the 2010 Honours List. Commented Richard: "What a fantastic honour. I'm absolutely thrilled."
“The OBE will further restore Richard Thompson’s status at the top table of British musical heroes as a folk revolutionary, one of the world’s greatest guitarists, a must-see performer and one of the finest songwriters this country has ever produced.” (The Spectator)
