'Sheik Yerbouti' or 'Them And Us' for me, but I only really like that late '70s early '80s era of Zappa.

This too was the first Captain Beefheart album I heard and bought. It remains one of my favourite Beefheart LPs. Others that I like and have are: Strictly Personal; Spotlight Kid, and the easily accessible Clear Spot.
The one Beefheart album that I cannot stand or understand is Trout Mask Replica. It divides opinion: some think it a work of genius, others, myself included, think it an unlistenable cacophony (largely due to it being mixed and produced by Frank Zappa). Every so often I pull it out hoping I will find out what all the fuss is about - but so far I hear nothing to change my mind.
Of Beefheart's later output, I quite like Bat Chain Puller, and his farewell album: Ice Cream for Crows.
