Crap weather for September 2026

Nice sunny day again, 20c and blue sky. Yesterday ended up the same, and got my front trees pruned and grass done late afternoon, after a very hectic day, but at least the end of summer (I like to use the astrological definition,as William’s birthday is the 21st June and Tamzin’s 21st September, so his marks the start, hers the end) is nice.

I do like autumn, but not the price I just paid for the heating oil delivery I am expecting today - £1.07 a litre, my first order not long after we moved in (7 years ago yesterday) was 33.75p per litre! That’s the Putin and Trump effect for you…

I'm trying to avoid putting the heat on for as long as possible this year. Might get one of those thermal blankets for when I'm sat round in the daytime and just have heat on for a couple of hours in the evening.

That is some price hike - might be time to consider alternatives, like solar+batteries. Though only if you plan to stay put long enough to recoup the costs. A customer of mine went with solar and batteries last year, she gets enough electricity to run the house and charge the ev.

Yes, I am looking at solar and batteries, also possibly heat pump, but will probably get an electric car runaround if we go solar as the fuel cost alone on that would pay for itself, really. Pay back on the solar/batteries is about 7 years, and I doubt we’ll move from here in that time. But then there’s all the faff, which is probably why I’m not that motivated to actually do anything about it apart from keyboard research!

Haven't lit the wood burner yet, and don't intend to until October. It's 20C indoors, so until that drops below 17C, the wood burner will remain dormant.

Good luck with the project, if you get around to it. Sadly, we're not allowed to install panels with our house being a listed building.

Anita got me one a couple of years ago, it even has a hood. Works a treat.

Plug-in solar panels became legal last month, you could look at getting a few of them. About 5 years to pay for themselves.
