I think it originated from farmers growing food that tastes like shit until it is cooked. Seriously, I'd have to say it comes from when I was a kid. My mother had very simple tastes, and cooked accordingly. She could not even be in the same room as an onion or clove of garlic.
I got a bit better since I left home, one of my brothers completely got over it (a few years living in Belgium might have helped). These days he'll eat any old crap. My youngest brother is even worse than me.
