It might explain why Laphroaig is my favourite whisky.

With whisky I don't like it smoky or too peaty, much preferring a rich, rounded sherry cask

I don't think I've ever had it, though I imagine it's a bit like kippers, which I do like.Whilst the French do make whisky, with Armorik being their most notable Malt, Laphroaig is actually a Scotch whisky made in Islay.
Islay is the southernmost island of the inner Hebrides. Islay boasts several fine whisky distilleries, Laphroaig being only one of them.
Other notable Islay whiskys are: Ardberg; Bunnahabhain; Bruichladdich, and Islay Storm.
