I've never heard you do Scouse. I'd assumed you'd had it beaten out of you at Uni. Or in electrocution lessons.

I never had a strong accent since my father was not from Liverpool and my mother, although from a very poor family, liked to try to talk posh - or at least without scouse accent, which she regarded as 'common'.

Although when stressed she'd lapse into Irish which was always amusing.

Got rid of most traces of it when working in telesales (who's going to buy over the 'phone from a scouser?) but I'm told it still comes through on certain words.

Well yes, electricity had only just been invented, and they were still looking for uses for it. Should bring it back if you ask me - even though its effectiveness as a teaching method has largely been discredited, it would at least encourage folk to go into teaching

I don't think that I sound terribly Glaswegian, although there's nothing wrong with that, as I went to a 'posh' preparatory school when I was a child (where we had elocution lessons), but like you with Scouse, can lay it on thick with a Glasgow accent when I want, usually when I go up to visit some mates.

Talking of accents - I too had elocution lessons at my prep school. I was born at a time when it thought that if you spoke 'well', not necessarily 'posh', but clearly enunciating words without a thick accent, you would have a good career. Well that is what my father thought, and it must have worked as sometimes get unsolicited comments from people saying how well I speak.

All seems terribly old-fashioned now.

It is, Barry, given that kids these days can hardly string two words together [you might get a grunt, if you're lucky], let alone write them in a grammatically correct fashion!
