He certainly made a right mess of the Return of the KIng.

I quite liked the LotR trilogy, some bits were shonky, but The Hobbit was appalling - 3 films, each around 3 hours long for a book a fraction of the size of LotR.

Someone has actually done what you suggest, The Hobbit has a fan edit made by a filmmaker - Maple Films

He turned the 3 film 532 minute mess into a single 247 minute film that's actually not bad, not particularly brilliant either, but better than Jackson's version. Peter Jackson is a bit overrated I agree.

A single edit of LotR would be good - probably one out there?

I agree the Hobbit is not a long book, and was not a great fan of the films but will have look at the fan edit, thanks for the heads up.

I was in New Zealand when the final one came out, The Return of the King. I went to a cinema in Christchurch on release day, well day before, as they started screening it at 1 minute past midnight. Prior to that they screened the first two films in their extended versions and the whole thing started about 4 pm and concluded about 3.00am. Most people in the audience dressed up as characters. New Zealand was gripped by LotR fever at that time. It was quite something to see.
Good grief, I couldn't have coped with that. I found long ago that I couldn't stay awake for a whole film, so I eventually knocked it on the head. The last film I went to see was 'Legend', with Tom Hardy x 2.

It sometimes happens at home too, but at least I can turn it off and watch the rest of it tomorrow.

First film I saw was 'Zulu' with my dad, I would have been 6 or 7. And the first film not accompanied by parents was 'Lady and the Tramp'.

That was 23 years ago Steve, I very much doubt I could cope with that now either . . .

I can’t remember the last time I saw a film at the cinema - it would certainly have been with the family - might have been the Alladin live action Disney reboot or one of those if it wasn’t that one.

I do need to watch more films either at home or the cinema, but I usually find if I’m not gripped early on I lose interest.

I stopped going to the cinema when they ceased to be single screen. Before that I would go every week on a Saturday to the matinee screening on my way home having done the shopping. Surprisingly I enjoyed most of the films I saw there.

Then I joined the recently started film club: I had joined a film club at University and liked the European and foreign films they screened, and the local film club showed the same. Sadly the film club closed a long time ago.

The last film I saw at a multiplex was 'Mr Turner' starring Timothy Spall. So to answer your question, the answer is none.

But with the ability to view umpteen channel on TV I have watched a lot of new films which I wouldn't have chosen to see at a multiplex. Also I have at least 150 DVD and Blu-ray discs to watch.

I'll comment on various directors and their films another time.

I go to the cinema quite regularly as my granddaughter (21) who is a comic nerd (Marvel/DC/Anime) like her grandad so we go whenever we can as the IMAX is only 20 minutes from us.

I might be 65 but in my head I'm still that 13 or 14 year old without a care in the world enjoying the freedom not knowing how shit the world will become and wishing I could turn the clock back.

Booked in for Supergirl next weekend and The Odyssey in July, with Spiderman to be booked in the next couple of days. Looking forward to Godzilla Minus Zero as well as a few others that will be released later in the year.

I too would like to see 'Odyssey', as well as the director's previous film 'Oppenheimer'.
