Last year we put bark chippings under our acer. All of a sudden we find we have some really weird looking mushrooms growing in it. Did a bit of research, and found it is called black morel (Morchella importuna), a highly prized edible mushroom... pretty poisonous when raw, but apparently really nice when cooked. So I'll give them a go on Tuesday and report back (hopefully not from a hospital bed)
Looks ok cooked. Note: this isn't my effort, mine will be rather more basic

There is only one way to avoid criticism: do nothing, say nothing and be nothing Aristotle
There were many mushrooms and fungi that would appear from time to time in my parent's garden. My father was always willing to see if they were edible. One clue was to look at the underside gills, if pink it was best avoided. Those that looked credible he would fry, but only try a very small piece: reckoning that if they were inedible he would not be poisoned.
You can buy books which illustrate edible fungi and the best way to cook them. Good luck!
