My 2019 Update Thread - My final system I think.

Agree on giving new models a spin, the technology and design has caught up, not quite to the extent of digital but it’s getting there.

Fyne Audio (ex Tannoy engineers) has caught my eye most from the newcomers.
Also giving the likes of Magnepan a spin, not heard a ‘static in my system before.

Perceptions of a nightmare to correctly place and lack of bass, but you never know till you try.

Certainly worth a try you seem to have quite a bit of space to be able to move them about.

Fyne - I had a listen to the flagship 'Vintage 15' at a show, with the optional supertweeters. They grew on me a bit after a shakey start, but IMO what I have now does what they do a lot better at less than a quarter of the money. Do work in smaller room though just like big Tannoys do.

Gave me a discount on my Rega P2 back in the day at Stereo Stereo with my first student Grant, was a few quid short of the TT with my preferred Nakaoka MP30, so he took one off another demo turntable and sold me that.

Gave the guy my Business ever since, He’s a very smart cookie!
Reminded him of that when I picked up my P10 from Loud n Clear, he genuinely blushed.

Think if that length of time I’d think they would hopefully give me a new unit yeah.
Looked after me really well, great guys to deal with.

As you have had this unit for only six months or so, I think the importer should loan you a replacement whilst yours is being seen to. I knew of one dealer who would do that with any piece of gear he sold.

Hopefully being a power supply it shouldn't take too long to diagnose the problem and fix.

Magneplanar aren't 'statics just to be pedantic, they used distributed magnets.

Jason at Arke Audio is trialling some Maggies with his Kratos bass enhancers, could be worth a listen.

who’da thunk it.
The most unlikely (and welcome) thing happened this morning.

UPS had been booked to collect my 2 box Dac today and I hadn’t taken it out the rack yet for boxing up.

When I last tried powering it on (And failed) I must have left the Dac power switch in the On position without realising it, the PSU wasn’t powering up the Dac so never gave it much thought at the time?

This morning, the PSU that previously wasn’t powering up was… warm - what?!
Dac still not powering up though so what’s going on says I.

On closer inspection it turns out it was me being a “feckin Eejit and the Dac is 100% working fine.

Took it to a mates the previous weekend and I had unboxed and set it up quite late when I got home and was quite tired.

Theres a chunky 19 pin umbilical cable that connects PSU to the Dac unit and, you guessed it, it wasn’t seated properly at the Dac end.
Really heavy plug and it clicks solidly into place when seated correctly.

I hadn’t done it properly, so,Dac wasn’t powering up
What a flippin’ Daftee!

Turns out the fancy SR fuse is intact as well, thought that had popped, so everything’s back the way it was and sounding just fine.
PHEW!

I’ll put it down to a Frank Spencer moment, Haha.

Had my knickers in a real twist about it, worse case scenario etc?
Goes to show sometimes you just need to take a step back and chill, and look at the situation differently.

Those "chunky" connectors are latching designs made by Lemo and 'click' when fully mated, a bit like XLR connectors. An easy mistake to make: I have done the same with the power supply connection for my Levinson preamp.

Now you can concentrate on auditioning new speakers.
