Well you can try most or possibly all of it via Youtube and see.

Steely Dan's sound changes somewhat over the years but is nothing like anyone else, nothing like Genesis or Dire Straits.

Neil Young's done everything from very gentle acoustic country to heavy rock. If you want rock try 'Love And Only Love' or 'Fuckin' Up' from 'Ragged Glory'. If that's not heavy enough for you then you can write him off.

I will give them both a listen Martin. Yes, my tastes are more heavy / Psych into Punk and EDM but I do listen to a lot of other stuff too and often discover bands that surprise me, so we shall see

I have no experience with either Robin. How would you categorise them ?

Well I must admit that whilst owning 7 Steely Dan albums on CD it would appear, I don't really know them that well. I think I probably acquired them 'cos everyone else said how good they are! I shall revisit, and as Martin suggests, the beginning is as good a place to start as any.

Comparison of Steely Dan with that of Genesis or Dire Straits is interesting, as one could say all three have a distinctive 'sound' and all three are very well produced.

But for me the similarities end there: I simply cannot stand Genesis, however I love the first two Dire Straits albums, but became bored with their later releases, such as "Love Over Gold" and "Brothers in Arms".

I agree the with Dire Strait's first one being the best. But I have a soft spot for 'Love Over Gold' since it was the first album I ever bought. Plus the title track is such a beautiful bit of music.

There's some crossover with Steely Dan since you've got Knopfler playing on 'Gaucho.' Which he does very well.

Also some lovely flugelhorn playing by our very own Guy Barker on track 8.

I don’t think this needs any commentary, other than the Linn Selekt is nothing more than a standard release and just one of Linn’s recommended demo discs !!
