Anita got me a pair of crocs a couple of years ago, and they live on the doorstep. I put them on whenever I go into the garden or put the bins out. I never venture beyond our boundary in them, because I have a modicum of self respect.

In the late 70s I used to wear baseball boots made by a firm called Rucanor. They were like a heavy-duty version of Converse "Chuck Taylor" All Stars, but only £15, while Converse at that time were nearly 30 quid (very expensive back then, they're only about £40 now). I'd wear them with "drainpipe" jeans and either a mohair sweater or cap-sleeve t shirt. It was as close to "punk" as I got, though really I probably looked more like an extra from West Side Story

Now you're saying that I think I've got some Converse 'All Stars' somewhere.

Will have to have a look for them. Next job on the calendar is sorting and rationalising my clothing, anyway.

I must have got them thirty years ago, worn them maybe twice then gave up on them.

Seem to recall they were ruinously expensive then.

I have a pair of Converse too, though not worn them since we moved here almost 6 years ago. Biggest problem I had with them is that the soles are so thin you could feel every stone or stick under your feet. I will have to dig through my wardrobe, there’s a pair of special anniversary edition Nike Cortez in there somewhere I keep wanting to look for.

I think shoes have generally become cheaper in recent years. Probably have the Chinese to thank for that. In 1978 I bought a pair of Kickers 'Hi Kick' boots, they looked a bit like monkey boots, but cooler. They were £30 back then, which was about a week's wage for me. In bright red (probably due to Elvis Costello's debut hit).

I bought another pair a couple of years ago, a nostalgia thing. They were £60, so price has only doubled in 45 years. But while the original Kickers were the comfiest shoes I'd ever had, these new ones are crippling, and I've only worn them once

That's the problem I had with them. Might be okay for someone who never walks any distance but that's not me.

How to guarantee your email will be deleted immediately…. Starting with “I wanted to circle back around” is going to do it, or using the phrase “reach out”…
