In the '80s I used to mostly wear Hi-Tech basketball boots. I don't remember them lasting any longer. Maybe go through a pair a year, I'd say its about the same now.

Nike were never that great for durability. Had a few pairs of Air and Air Max and they don't last six months.

Comfy though.

I honestly can’t say that trainers now are any worse than back in the 80s, never had any quality issues, but as Martin says, they wear out if worn regularly.

I try to keep one pair for good, another for general use and then a demoted pair for gardening, etc. I still keep a few older pairs in just about wearable condition, mainly because I’m a hoarder and don’t like to throw anything out! I can’t bring myself to throw away a pair of purple Puma Easy Rider - they lasted a good few years and the soles are threadbare but they were my favourites for a long time and not available again.

I used to get mine half price from the catalogue returns shop but they stopped doing catalogue returns and started selling tat instead.

Remember Gola trainers? Used to get them on the market in the 70s, cheap but crap. Still going but they're a pricey Adidas knock-off now.

I think I must be the only one here who does not, nor has ever owned a pair of trainers.
What I used to wear at school when in the gym were called plymsoles or tennis shoes.
Now, when I want to wear something informal, I wear deck shoes. I wear the same when flying, and if I intend to do some trekking, I will then wear walking boots.

It seems to me that trainers are an exercise in making a soft shoe using as many pieces of material as possible and to charge an absurd amount of money for their efforts.

You can buy cheap ones or expensive ones same as with deck shoes or walking boots.

Trainers are comfy, and practical too, if you ever need to have it away on your toes you don't want to be wearing shoes.

I've only ever worn shoes for work or formal events. Even at work I would keep a pair there and just wear them round the office. Change back into trainers to go home.

Would not be seen dead in deck shoes, sandals, slippers, sliders, flip flops, crocs. Never worn any of them. Did have a pair of desert boots once but the soles are too thin for me. Probably be okay in an actual sandy desert. Not much good on concrete.

I like desert boots as well, and I have some moccasins to wear in lieu of slippers.
Agree, crocs are the spawn of the devil, and look to be the perfect footwear to give you the sweaty feet!

1 certainly won't argue on Crocs... Even worse, Crocs with Socks! (But both my kids and even my dad don't care and love them! )

My Tacchin trainers arrived today (not sure how it takes a week in this day and age, but there you go...) Really pleased with them, they're definitely not leather, but after doing some further research I don't believe the blue ones would be, either. very happy at £35 notes and that saving enabled me to buy a pair of Skechers "Boat" shoes - never had either Skechers or boat shoes before, but fancied something a bit different to wear with shorts, and I have to say they are probably the most comfortable pair of shoes I have ever owned, memory foam insoles and very breathable.

Another vote for boat (aka deck) shoes. I'm wearing them all the time at the moment (usually without socks).
