The Garrard 301 Restoration Project PT LXXX - Moving Forward


Being a Garrard owner is bitter suite, on the one hand you own probably one of the greatest TT ever made and your TT will see you out if you can find a good example. On the other hand, developments are now few and far between. The 301 is now beyond its glory days of people developing new and amazing upgrades at reasonable prices in fact I don't think that there are any significant new developments for the 301. Any new development seems to come with a four figure price attached or five figures if your called Cadence . There are still a few things which I've not tried yet on the 301, mainly :-

1. DECO Audio Governor PSU.
2. Long Dog Audio PSU.
3. Hanzi HIFI PSU
4. Serene Record stabiliser
5. Russian Idler wheel.
6. A Permali/Panzerholz plinth

I do keep an eye out for reasonably priced second hand examples of the first five of the items on the list. I've tried three PSU's on my 301. These are the original motor and wall supplied electricty, the Nigels Speed Controller and finally the Pheonix Engineering system. Needless to say my favourite for some years has been the Pheonix system. I'll probably order and try the Serene record stabiliser and the Russian Idler wheel before the end of the year. The Garrard 301 Restoration Project PT LXXXI - Peace restored.

Today has been fun. I've moved one turntable project forward ever so slightly and I decided today to re-tweak the Garrard's voltage supply. I'd changed the input voltage to 220V into the Garrard's motor and decided to leave things for a weeks to see if I could discern any sonic changes. I instantly noticed a small amount of motor and idler noise coming from under the platter, this was a very small amount indeed and could only be heard with one's ear virtually stuck to the platter! This was no doubt quite disconcerting as I'm used to complete silence, still, I decided to let sleeping dogs lie and continue with the experiment. I left the new voltage value alone for 5-6 weeks and noticed that things didn't quite sound right. So, tonight voltage is back to 202V and things sound great again. It's a weird hobby! So I'm a happy man now that cosmic order and supreme Karma have been fully rebalanced.

The "greatest turntable ever made"? That's some claim - there are some who would suggest the EMT, Thorens TD124, Goldring G99, and Empire turntables to be equally valid contenders.

Charlie, have a look at post #464. I took a punt on an American product, so far I've never seen it resold on eBay. I paid <£150 all in (I think). I cant see a chassis stiffener on the CTC website, do you mean Audiograil? I can tell you now that Audiograil are doing something similar but probably a lot more expensive than my American product . Either way these DO make a difference (well to my ears), the only thing that probably betters these stiffeners is the thicker CNC milled chassis that CTC sell.

Oh, no offence taken at all Barry! The 301 is a great machine is some respects but woefully lacking in others.
