I think they can make a difference if their LCR is extreme in some way (you can buy cables with those little boxes attached that contain zobel networks that probably do something) or if there is an impedance matching issue between components in the system.
But in my system/room I cannot perceive any difference between several hundred quid's worth of thick as hosepipe, super pure copper, six separate conductors, with top dollar connectors speaker cable, and some generic 79 strand with the crappiest, worst looking plugs you ever saw, that I bought used for a tenner.
I just use the expensive one as it looks the part. And yes, before anyone asks, my system is 'very revealing', probably one of the most revealing systems I ever heard. Ofc it could just be my hearing is shot...
