Yes that rings a (cow) bell. They were bulking up the winter feed with it.

yup it was misfolded prions. probably from meat and bone meal from cows or sheep i remember. humans could catch creuzfeldt jacob, the human version of 'mad cow disease'. i remember many butcher products being banned like beef on the bone and maybe blood pudding too.. i think you had to have a certain gene susc eptability too to catch it. it was a fairly scary thought at time, which needless to say produced a lot of jokes.. cooking didnt kill it either, or render it harmless. dont think you could kill it as it wasnt technically a living source like bacteria etc

That's interesting as years ago I read a book about how life started and one of the definitions of what made something alive was the ability to replicate. I can't remember what else there was that presumably a prion wouldn't meet. I seem to recall something about mutation but that doesn't feel right, as if all our genes stopped mutating and our children were exact clones of us, it would be a bit off to tell them they're not alive.

I wonder what a prion based lifeform would look like. I'm surprised Kirk didn't encounter one in Star Trek.

After spilling a glass of good whisky over my good laptop..grr
I've had to step up and purchase another. Old one does work but keyboard doesn't. It occasionall has fits too.
New one is a good spec dell with 17 inch touchscreen. 16gb ram and a 1tb SSD.
It's in very good nick too.
It seems ok but will need to go through it.
    Looks like a decent buy.
