Last night I watched 'The Horse's Mouth' 1958, with Alec Guinness on DVD. A little odd and quirky, but entertaining. Bit of a rarity.

The Comancheros, 1961.





George Sherman produced this film, and Michael Curtiz directed it. During much of the shooting, Curtiz was seriously ill: he died of cancer shortly after the film's release. On the days when Curtiz was too ill to work, John Wayne took over direction. When the film was completed, he told the studio that he did not want credit as co-director and insisted that Curtiz's name alone appear as director. Wayne performed the same function in 1971 on "Big Jake (1971)," which was directed by Sherman, who took ill during production. Wayne directed the film on the days when Sherman couldn't and again insisted that he not receive co-director credit.

Because of Lee Marvin's performance as Tully Crow, John Wayne recommended Marvin to John Ford as the eponymous villain of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962).

The movie was a box office success, grossing $4.6 million at the box office and becoming one of John Wayne's most popular films.

In 1971, owing to the success of this film, John Wayne was number one at the U.S. box office for the last time.

This was the final film in which John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara worked together; they had previously collaborated in Rio Grande (1950), The Quiet Man (1952), The Wings of Eagles (1957), and McLintock! (1963), and O'Hara considered Wayne her first, best friend, even going so far as naming a wing of the home she shared with her husband, General Charles Blair, the John Wayne wing.

The automobiles driven by the Texas Rangers were "REO" Motor Car Company cars, the name of an actual automobile manufacturer founded in 1905. REO stood for the initials of its founder, Ransom E. Olds, the same man who founded another company which would become Oldsmobile. REO continued to manufacture motorized vehicles, mostly trucks and buses, as late as 1975 when they filed for bankruptcy, with the remainder of the company now owned by Volvo White trucks. All these cars are right hand drive. Cars sold in the US are left hand drive because that is the way it has been done since Ford in 1908. "Early American motor vehicles, however, were right-hand drive, following the practice established by horse-drawn buggies. This changed in the early years of the 20th century: Ford changed to LHD production in 1908 with the Model T.

Yes it's a difficult watch, and even more shocking when you know it is based on truth.
